Before I see the movie I hope you won’t mind me getting two things off my chest.
First, I understand when a movie is made from a character from another medium that they have to update them and “movieize” them. For example, James Bond was a chainsmokers who smoked 60 cigarettes a day, and the movies he doesn’t smoke at all. I really enjoy the first Captain America movie because it did update him, but kept the basic story intact. I wasn’t thrilled with the first two Thor movies because they totally redid the character.
I am really tired of movies not being original. DC only makes movies of characters that very recently have had their own TV show or their own movies. This makes me compare each movie to the last one rather than take each one individually.
Supergirl was introduced in Action Comics, in 1958, 20 years after Superman was introduced. She came as a teenager to earth. It bothered me that Superman immediately gave her a secret identity, Linda Lee. She was his last remaining relative and the last survivor of the planet Krypton and he wouldn’t give her a home. Superman had a pet dog named Krypto, Supergirl had a pet cat named streaky.DC killed Supergirl in 1986 but no one remains dead in a comic book forever.
Well, just came back from the theater and saw the movie. The main producer now at DC is James Gunn who wrote and directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. And that is what this movie is about. It is basically Guardians with a touch of Road Warrior.
A few partsof the movie are good, but most are very familiar and uninspiring. The best part of the movie and is Milly Alcock. She is good in this role, if you can accept the fact that a super being from the planet, Krypton,can get an inebriated. Milly deserves a better movie and a better storyline.
As mentioned virtually, none of the movie takes place on earth. And for much of the movie she’s not in uniform. As with the last two TV shows, Kara, is not so much of a Supergirl, but a super young woman. The movie does give her origin, which is very much straight out of the comic book. Here, she is given the reason to track down a bad guy and retrieve a McGuffin, which Alfred Hitchcock named for an item in the movie that everyone is after. You have seen this plot, as thin as it is, many times before.
I was surprised also at the lack of imagination and imagery when it came to most of her flying sequences. They were not done as well as you would think.
I really hoped this would be better But it really needed a better villain, and a real plot. I can’t discuss much more in a non-spoiler review but when the 4K comes out, I’ll have a few more comments and be a bit more specific.

Thanks Barry. The trailers did not inspire me at all. Sadly, it looks like the movie follows the trailer :(
