Title: Panasonic 9000P1K and JVC 4100 Projector
Post by: Barry on February 11, 2026, 11:30:34 PM
I have the Panasonic 9000P1K 4k -layer. Its Video output Is connected to my Macintosh A/V processor which is connected to the JVC projector. I really Get a nice picture.

But every once in a while my dealer, and a few others, tells me that I should connect the Panasonic player directly to the projector, using a separate wire.

I trust you guys. Would it really make a noticeable Difference if I did that? I’m actually happy with it now, but if it’s going to make it better, that would be great.

Splitting hairs. I doubt you can see the difference in real
Time. Maybe if you pause the video and compare images

Barry,

At one time you were looking at video processors.  Is that still something you're considering?  That would give you more of the enhancement that you're looking for, but at a lot more cost than a second HDMI cable.

I have a projector, the JVC 4100. I’M VERY SATISFIED WITH IT. When I got my new Panasonic pal, That dealer wanted to sell me an additional wire. I’m that turns out to be something I don’t need.

What are you suggesting? Not the Trinnov or anything really expensive. a wire would’ve been cheap

I thought you had been asking about a MadVR or Lumigan at one point.  While not as pricey as a Trinnov, they're many times the price of a cable.  ;)

You are absolutely right! I did ask about them. But as I recall, David said that with my screen being 110 inches it wouldn’t give me that much of an improvement. again, a new wire is so very cheap. It would be worth doing, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money to get a small improvement.

and thanks for your help

Screen size don’t have much to do with it. My screen is 120” and it’s a stark improvement. Probably the best addition I’ve ever made to the theater as far as picture quality. But def comes at a premium. But I know pj’s will come and go but the VP will always be part of it so makes the cost more justified

I believe that Barry has a 16x9 screen (correct me if I'm wrong Barry) and one of the best benefits of a VP is the ability to change aspect ratios "on the fly" with the auto detection. Yes, it can make calibration more accurate (and easier for the calibrator) and can improve the image, but a VP isn't for everyone.

Please forgive me if I asked tehse questions before:
The lumagen is simikar but far more expensive than the Madvr. First, what exxacltly does the Madvr do and, frankly, do I need someone to install it or is it dsomething I can do myself.
Finally, I should  attach it to my Processor and have the 4K player, Cable, Roku Satallite and Broadcast TV go through it.  Or just the 4K Player?

Everything is run through it. Barry, do you have a scope screen or a 16x9 screen?

You can hook it up yourself, but there is a VERY steep learning curve to it. You would probably want to hire someone to set it up. Before even thinking of upgrading, I'd go and watch a demo of it in person to see if it's worth the $$.

It’s 16 x 9.  David, I’m unclear on one thing here. If I put up a movie that is not 16 x 9 I get White at the top and bottom which I don’t see in the dark. so what is the benefit of the aspect change?

If you have a 2.35:1 screen that's the same height as you current screen, then when you watch 16x9 films it would be exactly the same as you're watching now. When a scope film comes on, instead of having black bars at the top and bottom of the image, the movie will fill up the entire screen and the black boxes would disappear.

Here's a video showing how it works:

Here's another good video for showing what the product does (outside of just aspect ratio change):

Barry,

Here's a link to the manual if you want to see how to set it up:  Setup manual (https://madvrenvy.com/wp-content/uploads/Envy-Quick-Start-Guide.pdf)

Either a Lumagen or a MadVR Envy Core are outstanding products to use and will make a difference in your system, but like a lot of things in the A/V world, the law of diminishing returns comes into play. I've kicked the tires on both products, but just can't seem to pull the trigger. Now if the stock market goes up 25% this year, then maybe I'll revisit it :)

Finally, here's a page that has LOADS of information (both videos and reading material). Say goodbye to your weekend if you want to watch/read them all :)  MadVR Tech Page (https://madvrenvy.com/#techsupport)

Thanks, these are big helps. And I feel the same way about you having the same tires and the same trigger and the same stock market.

seriously, my big problem too is that I actually like the picture I get on my 4100. I almost can’t believe I can get a better picture. I just wonder if there’s a local store where I can actually see the difference.

honestly, I’ve discussed recently with my brother that we never expected to get a picture as good as we have now on our screens. We love movies and we love seeing them on our system,. and hearing them.

I thought madvr is more expensive than the lumagen.

I would go second hand anyways on this. They are built like tanks.

The madvr is def more user friendly. But if you are good at reading directions the lumagen is a beeeze imho. Not what people make it out to be

The tone mapping is unmatched in a VP. That’s the biggest draw. But yes having. 1.85 screen does take away one perk.

I'm still hoping to find some deals on a second hand or B stock Lumagen once the ArtisaN comes out this quarter.  There should be people looking to upgrade at that point.

Used ones go pretty quickly, so it's remained a popular piece of hardware over the years.

I had a difficult conversation with David Silkin, a rep from MAdvr. He said he’d call me back, after a one minute conversation,  and never did.  I finally got hold of him.  He was in a very noisy room, I could barely hear him.  But he said he would NOT call me back later.

He said that the Madvr would not work well with my JVC projector and Panasonic Blu Ray player, and certainly not with my cable or streaming.  He said that these were condensed images and it would not work.

He did say that it would work on Kaleidescape.  He then say he would have a local dealer call me, but so far no one has called.

There must be some miscommunication here, as I have used the Envy with a JVC NX7, NZ9 and now NZ900. Used with 2 Panasonic Blu-ray players, AppleTV, Roku, Kaleidescape, etc. Works great with all of them, and the tone mapping for HDR content is demonstrably better than the JVC's native handling. The JVC's is good, to be sure, but the Envy's is better, especially with more demanding movies and scenes with deep black and shadows, very bright highlights, and so forth.

I'll send you a pm with my contact info and would be happy to answer any questions, and clear up any confusion.

Out of left field thing to consider, Barry.  With 110" screen size, you might want to consider some of the new TVs coming out.  They would offer brighter viewing that your projector which should give better results with tone mapping even without a video processor.  I don't think OLEDs are there at that size yet. but Hisense has a 110" mini LED for $15K right now.  I haven't seen it, so I can't say how it would compare to your JVC, but things are changing rapidly in the TV world.

It might be worth investigating, even if it's a few more years until it reaches a price you're satisfied with.

There are some that are too in love with projectors to ever consider a video screen and others who love the dynamic range of TVs with their higher peak light levels.  It's all a matter of preference.

The 100" + TV sizes are going to take over a lot of the projection market, I'm sure.

For me, and my 110" screen in a LR, it's primarily that my screen is retractable and I'm NEVER putting a 110" black box on that wall. For a dedicated media room, it's different obviously.

I have a 110" scope screen (which equates to an 88" 16x9 screen). My dream display is a 110" OLED that's 2.40:1 aspect ratio that has built-in aspect ratio detection :D That would be AMAZING!

While it's not quite the same thing, and I understand the audio limitations, as well as the cost (!), but I have been following the various VideoWall options recently, as they provide an intriguing approach to home theater. One of those is the ability to achieve a cinemascope aspect ratio. For those of us where movie watching has a high priority, this is the biggest downside of 16:9 screens, whether projector or TV.

I bought a C4 OLED for my den (77"), and I love it. I watch sports on it and play a few PS5 games. I have also watched an occasional movie on it if my wife was using the main theater and the calibrated picture on it is simply amazing.

I replaced an old 75" Sony X900E LCD in our family room with a 77" Samsung S95F - reflections in that room really bother me, where my wife is often cross-stitching with a bright light, and the matte screen makes a huge difference. I understand it's not for everybody, but for our situation, that tipped me toward the Samsung.

And agreed - picture quality is simply stunning. Check out this YouTube Video (https://youtu.be/ZsFDnSC8LPc?si=2432d1q4hQhlEn4P) - it is certainly manipulated, but the HDR pop is simply incredible!!
