Plot
When a gang of mercenaries hijack the USS Missouri during its farewell voyage, their plan is simple: steal the ship’s nuclear warheads and hold the world to ransom. But they’ve overlooked one tiny detail—the ships cook. Unfortunately for them, Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) isn’t just any cook…he’s a one-man army with a taste for mayhem.
My Thoughts
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Steven Seagal movies, but this is one of the best he ever did and it holds up well more than 30 years later with tight pacing and memorable villains. All of these types of movies have a check your brain at the door mentality to them, but the fight scenes depicted here are much more believable than most films in the genre (relatively speaking). Tommy Lee Jones steals every scene as the unhinged Strannix. Erika Eleniak makes a surprise appearance—which is the highlight for many fans of this film—and she’s definitely easy on the eyes. What was really fun about this revisit was witnessing all of the practical stunts versus the CGI intensive films we see today and at 103 minutes, it never drags.
Arrow has done an excellent job on this 4K restoration (HDR10 + Dolby Vision) and release. The video quality is excellent with sharp details throughout the ship’s interior steel corridoes, sweat on Seagal’s brow, and of course, the explosions. Primary colors shine with ocean blues and red lights, while contrast handles the dim below-deck scenes with deep blacks and minimal crush. Grain is resolved naturally, although some of the matte shots are a tad soft making the disc just short of reference-quality, but it’s probably the best the film has looked since the first print came off the production line in the 1990s.
The new Dolby Atmos track is also quite good immersing you in the battleship chaos with clear dialogue, punch gunfire, and the overhead speakers adding proper ambiance with helicopters flying over, missiles whooshing, and alarms blaring. The LFE channel gets a workout with multiple explosions, creating a dynamic element to the proceedings.

Conclusion
If you’re a ‘90s action fan, then you have a new movie to add to your 4K collection. It features strong A/V quality and holds up quite well despite being over 30 years old. Furthermore, the cake scene looks absolutely amazing in 4K and makes a purchase necessary for this reason alone. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, buy the movie and find out! Recommended .
