Delving into the hyper competitive world of Formula 1 racing, unsurprisingly F1: The Movie features stunning visuals and sonics, and should absolutely be seen in the theater near you with the biggest screen and best sound system. It's also a very engaging movie, not just AV demo material.
F1 stars Brad Pitt and relatively unknown Damson Idris as race car drivers, along with Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem in significant roles. The human characters are all subservient to the main event - the racing, but they have good chemistry and enough character turns to nearly match the race courses. If a superbly illuminating character drama is something you demand - as some critic reviews I've seen seem to - frankly you're an idiot to look for it here. As mentioned, the race is as much the main character as Pitt and Idris and we get great, visceral slabs of F1 racing. This seems like the best racing movie yet in terms of technical, "you are there" racing footage. I'm not an F1 fan so the cameos of current stars and other details that fans would pick up are lost to me as for most of the general audience.
The story has fairly basic themes of redemption, individualism vs team approach, mentoring and sacrifice, but they're woven together and executed very well. The teamwork side is highlighted effectively in various ways that despite the drivers being the individual stars, there are vital roles being performed behind the scenes. One of those highlights is Condon's position as the technical lead of the team and her crucial responsibility in the complex job of analyzing and building a super high performance machine that suits the specific strategies of the drivers.
It's not quite as good a movie overall as Ford Vs Ferrari, but it's a very engaging thrill ride. At about 2 1/2 hours long, it's also really well paced - the group I was with all found the time to go by quickly and not feel like an overly long movie. There are inevitable comparisons to Top Gun: Maverick, given that much of the same moviemaking team was behind both. It might be recency bias but we agreed that F1 was a little bit better movie in the end.

Saw this today with my wife and 4 friends in IMAX. Loved it. The fact it was filmed during the F1 race season made it really realistic - From the Strip Circuit to the Big Screen: How F1®: The Movie was filmed at the Las Vegas Grand Prix - Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix (https://www.f1lasvegasgp.com/2025/06/how-f1-the-movie-was-filmed-at-the-lvgp/#:~:text=Filmed during the FORMULA 1,Las Vegas Grand Prix%2C Nov.)

My wife told me she wanted to go see it in the theater, and I was surprised. I did not think she would enjoy it at all, but she loved it! So I bought the 4k movie to add to our collection.

It was mostly filmed during actual F1 races with real race drivers. It sure had an air of realism.
