Title: Oscar Noms
Post by: bmoney on January 25, 2025, 08:18:11 AM
As I post yearly after the noms come out I try to watch all the movies up for best picture and as many as I can of those for other major awards like best actor etc.

Here is my list (I won’t include dune2 cause it came out long ago and most have watched it as have I. And really enjoyed it)

The brutalist**
A complete unknown
Conclave**
Emilia Perez
I’m still here
Nickel boyz
The substance ***
Sing sing
The apprentice **
A real pain**
Anora**
September 5**

I will update the thread when I have watched them. Let’s start with going. A big 0 for 1

I watched the substance. What a piece of garbage. It started off ok. Very slow burn. But none made logical sense. And the ending was the biggest dumpster fire iv ever witnessed. God awful
Movie.  I have no clue how Demi Moore won a GG for this. And no clue how it can be up for best picture

2.5 out of 10 - avoid

I watched "Conclave" and while my wife and I initially found it interesting (with good performances), the ending isn't good and as recovering Catholics, we found it quite offensive and wouldn't recommend it.

I used to do the same as far as watching all of the Oscar nominees, but I'm past that now. I haven't watched the show in years because of their on stage preaching. To paraphrase Gervais, "Take your award, thank your agent and family and get the eff off the stage. No one cares what you have to say."

I don’t watch the Oscar’s any longer either.

I only watched the winners and noms for the historical factor.

Tonight’s watch was the Apprentice

Without any political opinion. I was fascinated by the movie. Not a great film
By any means. But a couple of nice performances worthy of their Oscar nods.

Was enjoyable biopic of Trump. If at all accurate makes sense why he is the way he is.

Just watched Conclave

great acting. Outstanding sound design and music. And very good overall minus the last 10 minutes. Ugh. Completely ruined the movie.

you are spot on with what you wrote.

I haven't seen any of those movies, and I don't watch the Oscar's, so it could be years before I see them! ::)

There is an important obsercvation here, about Demi Moore and the Golden Globes.  Simply, who votes for the Golden Globes?  There has often been scandals about this and they recently said, they have fixed it.  But who are the voters and what are their credentials? They are anonymous, international,  people somehow connected to "journalism" but not necessarily the arts, or movies, or anyhting. But who chooses them? You know they are allowed to take bribes , which they call "gifts? These are worthless awards, really. Celebs get a free dinner and CBS get 9 million viewers and Demi Moore already has golden globes.

Entertainment journalists from recognized media organizations vote for the Golden Globes. The voting body is made up of about 300 journalists from around the world.

Watched September 5 tonight

My kind of movie!! Period film. True story. Suspenseful

Amazing how much technology has evolved in a short ammount of time. Now everyone has a live new studio in their pocket. Good or bad thing

Worth a watch definitely

Nominated for best original screen play.

Thus movie is exactly why I try to watch most nominations. There are some gems in there I never heard about and I try out (other than your reviews haha)

The brutalist

Watched this last night I can see this being the favorite for many Oscar’s this year. It’s def got enough noms

Not the best ending but captivating with great performances.

Next up is Sing sing

Wife & I watched Conclave last night. She wanted to see it in part b/c she has a trip planned to Italy in a couple of months, and travel always motivates her to watch movies set in the destination. (I don't fly - for the time being - so she's going with a friend.)

She's a former Catholic - and liked it a lot including the ending. It's a rare but real thing and was clearly part of the setup throughout the movie, but a twist that was hard to see coming because most people won't be familiar with it. Most of the rest was fairly well telegraphed and performed.

Agreed. Glad it got recognized with best screenplay.

Just finished Anora

Um. Ok.

While a decent almost edge of your seat movie. The payoff was terrible. And it was borderline XXX film for the first 1/4

I don’t think the best movie won best picture here. I can see how she won best actress however.
