Title: Nosferatu: A non-spoiler review (Almost )
Post by: Barry on January 12, 2025, 12:31:49 PM
They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky….Nosferatu!!!!

I saw the movie in an AMC Dolby Laser theatre. This was not my first “vampire.”  My first was (really) “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”

This is almost a non-spoiler review because you probably already know the plot. Nosferatu is based on a 1922 silent film that was a “rip off” of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Stoker’s family sued and won and all copies of the film were to be destroyed. But just like a vampire, the original movie keeps coming back!!!! This story is very similar, not just to the original movie, but to the book and movie of Dracula. But, in this movie,  the names were changed to protect the innocent! It should also not be forgotten that the original Nosferatu was anti-sematic, giving the vampire stereotypical Jewish features at the time.

So there is nothing very new here. A mid-19th century town is slowly being invaded by a vampire.  As with so many vampire movies, there are vampires but no one believes in them and they, at first, just think it is a disease killing the townspeople. However, the story is told very well and the casting and acting is also good.  I rate this movie as a “good” but not one that I would really want to see again and buy the 4K.  More about that later.

What impressed me was the wide rage of color, or often, the lack of it, in the cinematography.  The images go to almost black and white to bright colors in an uncommon way.  When reviewed here I would like to know how that appears on the 4K disc.

The audio was a bit of a problem.  First, there is not great surround sound here. But, at many times, I had trouble understanding the dialogue.  One day, I might stream this with the closed captions on, just to get the dialogue I missed.

I’m torn weather I want to see this or not. Oscar noms always push me toward watching. Lol
