2017 Denon AVR models ---> S530BT/S730H/S930H/X1400H/X2400H/X3400H/X4400H/X6400H
D+M USA has started to release information on the new 2017 Denon models beginning with the three new "S" series models. The lower "X" series models should be announced in April with the higher "X" series announced later this summer. A new “flagship” model to replace the X7200WA should be announced later this fall and is expected to be released in Spring 2018 and will have a separate dedicated Owner's thread.
What's new or being added via a firmware update for the 2017 models?
S530BT
- HDMI Control/ARC/TV Audio Switching (added for the first time on this lowest model)
- Bluetooth Auto-Select (ON/OFF – prevents Bluetooth devices from powering on the AVR or selecting Bluetooth source when in range)
- Restart - (in lieu of having to pull power cable)
- 4K Signal Format (not a setting on this model rather it simply internally factory defaults to Enhanced (4K60,4:4:4, 10 bit video) and cannot be changed
S730H/S930H/X1400H/X2400H/X3400H
- AK4458VN 32 bit DAC (primary)
- PCM5100 32 bit DAC (Network)
- Bluetooth Version 3.0, Class 1 - up to 98ft/30m
- Audyssey iOS/Android phone app ($20) - (first released for the 2016 models) using the Audyssey mic, provides the ability to customize Audyssey EQ speaker/sub curves, save them, and load back to the AVR in only a couple of minutes
- The "H" series models include a HEOS module which will allow streaming the (currently) 12 music services using the HEOS iOS/Android app to the "H" AVR model as well as allow streaming 2CH sources (analog from X2400H and lower; digital+analog on X3400H and higher) from the AVR to one or up to 32 HEOS wireless speakers placed around the home
- Auto Update - (default - OFF), allows for firmware updates while the unit is in Standby
- 4K Signal Format (Standard/Enhanced; Note: Enhanced setting must be used when passing 4K60,4:4:4, 10 bit video)
- SAVE & LOAD (to USB; replaces Web Control SAVE/LOAD)

This is a 5CH AVR which features Bluetooth, but is not a networking model. Firmware updates would be installed via the USB jack. It includes a mic for a basic (ie. non-Audyssey) single position speaker/sub calibration. It can display the GUI over 2D/3D video on HDMI1 and HDMI2 and pass through 4k/60Hz video from HDMI3/HDMI4/HDMI5 but cannot display the GUI over 4k video. It uses the “Denon 500 Series Remote” Bluetooth app.

Upgrading from the S530BT adds 1 more HDMI input and two more audio channels for a 7CH model and the lowest model to feature Audyssey MultEQ (6 mic positions), networking, DSD via USB/network source, Atmos/DTS:X 5.2.2, DTS:X and uses speaker posts, 32 bit DAC, and an on board Denon HEOS module (allows streaming of HEOS app music services to the AVR as well as streaming PCM 2.0 source from the AVR to HEOS wireless speakers set up around the home). Firmware updates are installed via a network connection or USB. It can display the GUI over 2D/3D video from all HDMI inputs, but not over 4k video. It features 5.1 + Zone 2 capability using the Surround Back speaker posts for Zone 2. A new SAVE/LOAD via USB feature has been added. There are no Zone 2 pre-outs. No noticeable difference in power; however, audio quality should be improved after running Audyssey.

Welcome to the Official 2017 Denon AVR-S/X models thread (S530BT/S730H/S930H/X1400H/X2400H/X3400H/X4400H/X6400H).
If this is your first visit to this thread, and you want to ask a question about one of the 2017 Denon AVR models, either one that you own or one that you are thinking of buying, please provide the following information to allow for better responses to your questions:
(a) Identify the model number in question (eg. X2400H), as there are 8 different models (S and X series) discussed in this thread. Also if you have not posted in several days since your initial post, please post the model # again so we don't have to back track to learn which model you are referencing.
(b) Identify what you've done so far to troubleshoot the issue and what the front panel is displaying if an audio issue, (also take a few minutes to review the Troubleshooting section provided in post 3 as your question may already be answered there,
(c) Unless you indicate what settings have been changed, the assumption will be that all settings are on the factory defaults (ie. usually "Auto"),
(d) If the advice given seems to simplistic or obvious, don't shoot the advice giver as we have no idea of the level of your technical understanding,
(e) If there is no response to your post, it either means no one knows the answer or it has simply been overlooked so please repost if you still haven't resolved your issue,
(f) If you post a question in this thread and are given advice and either it or some other advice (eg. Denon phone support, Denon "Ask a Question" email support) resolves your issue, have the common courtesy to post back what solution resolved your issue so others can learn from it as well,
(g) If the issue is not user error or not just a misunderstanding on how the AVR works, please call Denon support so the issue is registered,
(h) When responding to another post that is providing assistance to you, please press the "Quote" button in the lower right corner of that other poster's response so that response is also listed with your new post to provide some context, and,
(i) If you don't live in either the USA or Canada, please indicate your country location in your post as some Denon models from other regions in the world differ in configuration from their USA/Canada counterparts otherwise responses made will be regarding the USA/Canada models.

Looks like there will be some nice improvements all around with these new models. I'm personally looking forward to seeing what the X7400H brings to the table ! :)

Once they are released, AV Science will only be selling the new "X" series models.

The biggie to me is the ability to adjust the curve. People have been wanting that for a long time and one of the reasons people have been going to devices like miniDSP Dirac. :)

Although we don't sell the "S" series models, we are expecting our first shipment of X1400H/X2400H units by next week. Please call AV Science for pricing and to get on the pre-order list. The X3400H should be available sometime in June.

These models are the upgrades to the S730H and S930H respectively and include an extra year of warranty, Zone 2 pre-outs (required if you want to run 7.1 + Zone 2), and also the better version of Audyssey MultEQ XT.

The latest firmware update to the HEOS app now allows for Network Sharing in which you can stream audio from a PC, MAC, or NAS Drive to HEOS speakers or to one of these new "H" series AVR models. :)

1. Yes, however, the HLG update will come via firmware later this year.
2. Yes, the 2016 models will get both the DV + HLG updates via firmware later this year.
3. Correct. HDMI 2.1 is a hardware upgrade which also requires a new HDMI cable as well. We won't see HDMI 2.1 AVRs until the 2018 models are released.

The new DTS Virtual:X firmware update should be released this month for the X3400H and lower models. This features simulates height audio when there are no height speakers configured when playing DTS audio. The X4400H/X6400H aren't scheduled to get the update until next spring.

AVScience is currently in negotiation with Auro Technologies to purchase a bulk order of Auro 3D Demo Discs Vol 2. Once received (which may be awhile as they are currently out of stock), we will provide a disc free of charge to all customers who have already purchased or plan on purchasing a 2017 Auro 3D capable Denon/Marantz model (ie. X4400H/X6400H/8500H) from AV Science.

Question about Heos.
So currently I am able to use the Heos App on my iOS device to control streaming music from tunein and other supported services on my x6400h feeding 7.2.2 speakers.
If I purchase wireless Heos Speakers and place them around the home, can I have my AVR and wireless Heos speakers playing the same music source simultaneously?
Do I control that from the Heos App? Send to multiple Heos devices (AVR and wireless speakers)? Or does the AVR output to the wireless speakers?
Also, any chance the Sonos lawsuit will result in Denon abandoning Heos and leave us with unusable Heos speakers?

Yes. The AVR is considered a HEOS speaker as well and could be grouped with other HEOS speakers in the home to play the same audio. You would do so from the HEOS app. You can also stream 2CH sources connected to the AVR to the HEOS speakers as well, again using the app.
Unknown as to what will happen as a result of the Sonos lawsuit, although likely a payment of royalties to Sonos.

Can someone explain how Denon intends to release a firmware upgrade for the X3400H/X4400H/X6400H AVRs (https://denon-uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6333/~/arc-%2F-earc-compatibility) to support eARC when eARC is part of the HDMI 2.1 spec? It is unclear (Denon does not explicitly say anywhere I can find) what HDMI spec these AVRs are equipped with. Is Denon implicitly saying that these AVRs already have the HDMI 2.1 hardware?
According to an HDMI representative it is in theory possible to firmware upgrade HDMI 2.0b compliant devices to HDMI 2.1 provided that the supporting hardware is already there but it is unlikely that any manufacture would have done that because the parts to do so are expensive. I could see the premium X8500H flagship falling into this category but it doesn't. The flagship will have to be sent back for the HDMI 2.1 hardware upgrade! So if the flagship needs a hardware upgrade then why don't the other AVRs?
Something is just not adding up here. Is there something we should know (https://hdguru.com/hdmi-2-1-features-quietly-appear-in-some-av-receiver-specs/)?

Although eARC is part of the HDMI 2.1 spec, it does NOT require HDMI 2.1 to work, rather it can work with the current HDMI 2.0b hardware if the mfr chooses to release a firmware update do so. Denon and Marantz have chosen to do so with their upper level 2017 and 2018 models. Keep in mind, however, that the TV must also be eARC capable in order to pass the HD audio to the eARC capable AVR.

Hey guys! First post here in this subforum. I'm getting a Denon AVR-X4500H to replace my aging Onkyo TX-NR905. Pretty excited about it as you can imagine. I am very curious to see how much a difference in sound quality 10+ years of new receiver technology has improved. The only thing I'm a bit worried about is the amp section in these new receivers. My old Onkyo weighed 54 pounds, this new Denon only weighs 30 pounds. I'm assuming most of this weight loss is from a skimped down amp section. Does the Denon use class D or class A/B amplification? Class D might account for the weight difference.

My old Onkyo weighed 54 pounds, this new Denon only weighs 30 pounds. I'm assuming most of this weight loss is from a skimped down amp section. Does the Denon use class D or class A/B amplification? Class D might account for the weight difference.

I had been running with a 7.2.2 speaker configuration with 2 Dolby Enabled Front speakers. I added a pair of speakers that I configured as Rear Heights so now have 7.2.4 speakers.
Last night I was playing non-Atmos content from my Apple TV 4K. The ATV4K sends multi-channel PCM rather than DD+.
If I selected Multi-Channel + Dolby Surround as the Movie sound mode, audio was sent to my Surround Back speakers. The Denon IOS remote control App confirmed this showing all 13 speakers receiving audio.
But if I selected Multi-Channel + Neural X as the sound mode, the two surround back speakers did not receive any audio. The App also showed all speakers except the two rear surround back speakers getting audio.
Is this normal? That Neural X does not support the full 7.2.4 configuration I have?

It may be an issue with Apple TV PCM signals. If I play a DTS MA disc, the Neural X up-mix supplies audio to all speakers including surround back.

Nope. DTS Neural:X can support a 7.2.4 configuration.

I was changing sound formats using the Denon Remote Control App on my iPad. I have since determined it was Auro 3D that was not sending sound to the rear surrounds, not DTS Neural X which does. This makes sense that it was Auro 3D.
The App has a bit of delay in populating the speaker diagram and I didn't wait long enough for the App to update the speaker diagram when I selected Neural X.

On the X4400H/X6400H, Auro 3D only supports a 10.1 setup, such that if the VOG/Top Surround is not configured, that means at most either 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 (ie. no rear surrounds when 4 height speakers are configured).

I hadn't used Auro 3D much but I really like what it does with music sources. I think I will replace the front Dolby Atmos enabled speakers with speakers mounted high on the front wall instead.
That should improve the Auro 3D I get from music sources, and the front heights probably won't be any worse for Atmos/DTS:X than the ceiling bounce from Atmos enabled speakers.

Since Auro 3D was first introduced on Denon/Marantz models 5 years ago, and the fact that there still to this day are not any movies available in the USA, the common theme among users has been they enjoy using AuroMatic on 2CH music sources over Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X.

As suggested in the article below, try using an ethernet cord instead of WiFi, otherwise the firmware is available on Denon's website.

So after posting I was happy with my X6400H and won't consider upgrading this year, it lost network connectivity.
A couple of days ago, can't be exact, I found the AVR reporting Update Complete. I was confused as I thought I did not have it set to firmware auto-update. I didn't think anything more of it at the time.
Today I decided to use Air Play from my iPhone to play music to the AVR. Apple Music did not list the AVR. I brought up the Denon App on my iPad and it did not see the AVR.
I went into Network settings and found it defaulted to WiFi which I have never configured on the AVR. I tried to change to Ethernet but it reported that I need to connect a LAN cable.
I went back to try WiFi and it could not find my network or any of my neighbors' networks.
I checked the DHCP setting and it was turned off. If I turned it ON, exited, and returned, it was back to Off.
I decided to try a Network reset. It got up to and became stuck on Assigning Network. Now any restart resulted in the stuck Assigning Network.
I did not see any option of microprocessor reset so decided I had to do a full factory setting reset.
Once that completed, I once again had network connectivity.
I then let it update the firmware. It appeared to complete, but then it again reported stuck at Assigning Network.
So it looks like I will have to restore to factory settings and stay at that level of firmware for now.
Update: I tried again. This time; restore to factory settings and immediately allow a firmware update to be downloaded and installed. The update completed successfully and there is network connectivity.
But in my first attempt that failed, I loaded saved settings from a USB drive before attempting the firmware update that failed in Assigning Network.
This time I did not load saved settings but immediately updated firmware. Now an attempt to load settings from the USB reports invalid or corrupt file.
So I wonder if there is some settings incompatibility that occurs with the latest firmware?
So now I have to complete the setup and do an Audyssey calibration. I considered going back to factory firmware but then I would lose Auro-3D.

That sucks Claw, but at least you got it fixed and saved some $$$ on ordering new gear. Hopefully the calibration goes smoothly.

I have run Audyssey so many times over the years that I know exactly where to position the microphone for the 8 locations to get the result I am looking for.
Sounding great again. 7.2.4 for Atmos movies and 5.2.4 for music using Auro-3D.
Last but not least, I turned off Firmware Auto-Update.

Auro 3D was released on the X6400H from the factory.
