Plot
Ferris Bueller (Mathew Broderick), his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck), and his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) ditch school for the day and frolic around Chicago in a Ferrari. Although Ferris's parents think he's the ideal child, his sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), and principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), knows better and would like nothing more than to catch Ferris in his shenanigans.
My Thoughts
John Hughes had quite a career and wrote and directed many “classic” films from my youth, but this may arguably be one of my favorites. There’s something to like in every one of his films, but what sets this one apart from the rest is the title character. The’s the guy everyone wanted to be in high school—popular, charming, and the guy with a great looking girl on his arm. Better yet, he never gets caught for any of his hijinks.
I remember reviewing the Blu-ray of this many years ago and not being very impressed. Fortunately, this is a brand new encode of the film and all of the previous flaws are gone. The natural film grain is back, flesh tones look natural and clear versus the waxy mess, and the color palette is to die for. There’s no better color for a car than Ferrari red and it shines with the HDR treatment. Finally, the black levels are vastly improved.
Shockingly, Paramount has included a Dolby Atmos track for this release and it improves on the already impressive Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track that was on Blu-ray. The stereo separation is wide across the front of the room and the dialog is precise and clear and firmly rooted in the center speaker. The surround speakers do a good job of providing ambiance and the Atmos really shines during the parade sequency.

Conclusion
This is one of my favorite comedies from the ‘80s and it’s nice to see Paramount giving it the A-list treatment it deserves with both a brand new 4K encode and a beautiful collectible Steelbook packaging. It’s a surefire upgrade over the Blu-ray making it easy to recommend to collections.
