Title: Black Book
Post by: David Vaughn on August 04, 2023, 09:44:45 PM
I recently reviewed this for S&V via the Kaleidescape store. One of my favorites of this century: Black Book (https://www.soundandvision.com/content/black-book)

I remember watching that not long after it came out and liking it a lot. Certainly was impressed enough by Carice van Houten that I recalled her when she started appearing in Game of Thrones.

Love that movie. I've had it on Blu-ray for years! Also check out Flame and Citron.

I somehow missed this one when it first came out, so I've added it to my queue.

I agree with you about the extras.  Some of these are little more than fluff-filled publicity interviews, which aren't really relevant once you have the movie.  Films like this cry out to have someone speak to the historical period and accuracy of the story against what really happened.

I haven’t watched extras in a movie in prob 10 years. Inused to always watch them. But with YouTube. You don’t need to do that doesn’t bother me if they aren’t sufficient with a disc release

We watch extras on the disc on occasion. Top Gun Maverick and Interstellar and Tenet come to mind.

Watched this on Blu-ray over the weekend, and my wife and I both thought it was outstanding.  A complex and complete story that jams a lot of plot into its runtime, but never feels rushed.

I'll add one thing - this is an excellent example of how you can feature a strong female antagonist that uses her wits, charms, and intelligence rather than being shown as a simplistic but indominable physical fighter in a waif's body that we see so much of.

It's the kind of character we deserve to see more of.

Watch " Female Agents " - another good European war film.

High praise. I have to get thru my queue. I tend to watch fewer
Movies when it stays light out later
