Plot
What would you do if you discovered an enormous comet will collide with Earth and all humanity would be annihilated?
My Thoughts
It’s been many years since I sat down to watch this film. I remember its release on DVD back in the early days of the format and watched it on my 48” Sony 4x3 RPTV and modest sound system. Boy how times have changed over the past 25 years! I remember there was a lot of controversy at the time because there were two movies that essentially had the same story—this and Armageddon. While the latter falls into the somewhat campy column due to Michael Bay’s direction, this one is more dramatic (or better yet, melodramatic) and its ensemble cast does a good job of making you care about their plight. While this isn’t a classic by any stretch, it’s enjoyable and entertaining and holds up well after 25 years.
The presentation is about what one would expect from a film from the late 1990s. The film has been remastered in 4K by Paramount for its 25th anniversary and the results are quite good. The overall palette leans towards the warm side and features strong primary colors. Detail is also quite good and the film grain is mostly preserved in its natural form. The HDR grading adds a bit of depth to the image and features solid black levels. The TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is mostly front loaded and features some decent directional cues. Furthermore, the overall mix features adequate dynamic range considering its age.

Conclusion
I like both Deep Impact and Armageddon for what they are—mindless entertainment vehicles with likable stars and entertaining stories. I can’t really say which one is my favorite. I watched Armageddon back in February and had a great time with the film and I can say the same with this on. While this one is more dramatic in nature, it also has some great special effects that make you wonder how well the human race would fare if a comet/asteroid were to hit the Earth. In all honesty, I don’t like our chances.
