This is been a triple-header Godfather year for me!!!
First, I thoroughly enjoyed the 4K versions of Godfather I and Godfather :. I thought Coda improved over the original version and I enjoyed that too, but it was certainly not as good as the original two godfathers which I often view as one movie.
I did enjoy the “Offer.” This was a 10 part series shown on Paramount plus. Many reviewers didn’t like it and many of the viewers did. I think this was because it was not a typical 10 part TV miniseries. It was more of a docudrama that you might see on the History Channel. It was shown from the producer’s perspective so the director, Francis Ford Coppola, actually played a supporting role. But it did explain a lot of how the movie was made and what we saw what we did.
And then in the last two weeks I actually read the book the Godfather for the very first time. I think I avoided it because I thought it would be Pulp Fiction. Meaning there would be a lot of sex and violence that was gratuitous and sensational. I also thought it would be an inside look into the Mafia which I was not really interested in. It turns out I enjoyed the book very much. Although it did have some of those Pulp Fiction elements they were not dominant throughout the book and there was no inside look of the Mafia. That would be a movie like Goodfellas. Here Puzo mined Mafia mythology and folklore. But he gave me the background of so many of the characters I saw in the movie and that was just very interesting. Also with two exceptions everyone will got nailed deserved it.
These were two great movies.
