from yahoo (https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/box-office-top-gun-maverick-151556697.html),
“Top Gun: Maverick (https://variety.com/t/top-gun-maverick/)” pulled in blockbuster ticket sales in its opening weekend, collecting $134 million from a record 4,732 North American cinemas. Paramount (https://variety.com/t/paramount/) and Skydance’s all-American action adventure is expected to collect $151 million through Monday, defying expectations while also looking to set a new high-water mark for Memorial Day opening weekends.
Anybody planning to see this?

Yes, but getting good seats has been very hard!
-
Good luck. So far, from folks who have seen it, they all gave it top reviews.
Will check it out once the crowds go down in a few weeks. :)
-
Definitely want to see this. Watched the original last night with my 26 year old nephew who'd never seen it. And aside from the parts of it that were used constantly as home theater demos for a certain time, it's been at least that long since I saw it. Some parts didn't age that well IMO... the constant repetition of 2 songs in the soundtrack among a few things.

I refuse to watch anything in the theater

I don't mind watching big action movies in the theater. Like the sound and action on the big screen.
Only drawback of course are the high ticket prices and prices for food and drinks. Also, sometimes you get crazy people who talk or make lot of noises as well as using their phones while watching the movie. Distracting to see a movie and a light from the phone comes up.
-
I’m never pleased with the presentation. The sound isn’t right. Or the projector isn’t lined up properly with the screen. Nvm the d bags in the theater they have no respect for anyone else lol

I agree with the above as well but I do like to treat myself and the family for an outing once in awhile. :)
Later, anyways, I will get it and watch it on the home theater. :)

I am going Tuesday afternoon to see this at A Dolby theatre. I mentioned this before but they open the new one literally five minutes from my house and they give a discount if you sign up on a membership group, they have. They also give you a discount on popcorn. Sadly the popcorn may have been made during the release of the first Top Gun movie. And they don’t give you butter they give you something that masqueraders butter. And it isn’t cheap, I think you have to get a credit check before you buy them popcorn and candy.

It doesn't taste the same when they stopped using coconut oil to pop it. And yes....bring your own Brinks truck to pay for it.

movie beat $124M.. Made $160M over the weekend.

I saw the movie today at a Dolby theatre at 3:30 in the afternoon. There were approximately 50 people in the audience. On the Barry scale this is a “good” movie. David will like it because it has a lot of action and long chase scenes. The plot is a bit predictable but the characters are Interesting to watch and the movie moves swiftly. You really don’t have to have seen the first movie because this movie brings you up to date quickly. The biggest surprise was before the movie even began Tom Cruise appears in an announcement thanking people for coming to the movie theatre and seeing the movie in person. For us the photography was very good and the surround sound was also good.

Thanks for the review Barry and glad you enjoyed it.
Will have to see it shortly.
-
Finally got to see it tonight. Barry's right...I LOVED IT! In a lot of ways, it's better than the first movie and much more emotional than I thought going in. My eyes welled up a couple of times....then again, I LOVE the original as well and remember the first time I saw it like it was yesterday.
I can't wait for the 4K disc to be released...the LFE was off the charts and the surround speaker usage was outstanding as well. I really liked the intro by Cruise and thought it was a nice touch...furthermore, he's 100% correct...this is a movie to see on the big screen and not on you 42" LED with a soundbar.
-
Glad you enjoyed it as well David. Have not heard any negatives so far so that is good. :)
-
Really really looking forward to this. And the new Jurassic world
-
You know, speaking of Jurassic world, I am kind of spent on the entire series. The first was great and all but the rest are just money makers. lol. :)
-
Saw the movie over weekend in imax. Enjoyed it a lot.
This movie now crossed $1B.
From variety (https://variety.com/2022/film/box-office/top-gun-maverick-highest-grossing-movie-globally-1235303535/?sub_action=logged_in),
"Paramount (https://variety.com/t/paramount/) and Skydance’s all-American blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick (https://variety.com/t/top-gun-maverick/)” is still flying high at the box office, crossing the coveted $1 billion milestone over the weekend."

My recommendation for anybody who has not seen this and want to is to book the late late showing (last showing) available on a Sunday night at imax. The crowds will be very very low since most people will have to go to work the following Monday. This is what we did. We booked the 10:30pm Show for Imax screening last Sunday night and besides us, the only other family was there a row away from us.. We both had the entire theater to ourselves.

Definitely see it on the biggest screen you can and if there's an upgraded audio option (there is at my local theater), it's worth the extra few dollars. While I loved the movie and can't wait to see it at home, I fear the presentation may not be as impactful even with a 110" screen...audio wise, I'll take my room over the theater (even with their upgraded audio)...my bass response will be better :D

I actually didn’t mind the Jurassic world movie at thr imax. But the price tag wasn’t fun lol

I believe Top Gun Maverick will help you justify that price! :)
David is right, see it in IMAX.. I believe the flight recordings in the air were all filmed on IMAX...

Here is the link for those curious about the IMAX filming...
from koimoi (https://www.koimoi.com/hollywood-news/top-gun-maverick-had-real-breath-taking-aerial-shots-with-6-imax-cameras-footage-of-813-hours-filmed/).
"Each cockpit of the multi-million jets had a brand new camera system, which allowed six IMAX-quality cameras inside. The Top Gun Maverick director Joseph Kosinski revealed that these six cameras were put in a different direction, four cameras looking back at the actor and two looking forward. There were two jets in the air, which means 12 cameras were being used constantly, without counting the ones on the ground and other exterior mounts."

I was able to download this film on Kaleidescape and the presentation is off the charts good. Video is sharp and detailed and the Atmos audio is outstanding. While there aren't a ton of directional overhead cues, the overall track is enveloping and the fighter jet sequences are all demo-worthy moments. Furthermore, the LFE is intense and packs quite a punch. Hopefully the UHD (and Blu-ray) release will match what K-scape brought to the table.

Such a great movie and presentation for sure
