Plot
Under the visionary direction of Brian De Palma and with an adapted screenplay by David Mamet, The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece 0 a glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of good versus evil on the streets of Prohibition-era Chicago, with unforgettable performances by Robert De Niro as mob warlord Al Capone and Kevin Costner as law enforcer Eliot Ness. Sean Connery earned an Academy Award for his portrayal of veteran official Jimmy Malone.
My Thoughts
While I’ve never sat down and formally written a “Top Movies” list, I’m sure this would be in the Top 20, if not cracking the Top 10. This came out the year I graduated from high school, and I remember going to see it with a group of friends. We liked it so much, we went back the next day to see it again. The movie works on so many levels with its excellent writing, riveting musical score, and most of all, the chemistry among the four Untouchables that has the viewers rooting for the good guys. The cherry on top is De Niro’s portrayal as Capone, which is one of the best of his career.
I wasn’t sure how well this would translate to UHD but it looks pretty good with a few rough patches thrown in. The image doesn’t have a ton of depth and at times can look a bit flat, especially the color palette. Most of this is intentional to portray the 1930s “look,” so you can’t blame the encode on that. I did a quick comparison to the Blu-ray that I own and the UHD is definitely and improvement.
Thankfully, the audio track has been updated to a Dolby Atmos mix and it shines from beginning to end. Dynamics are adequate, dialog intelligible, and the incredible score has never sounded better.

Conclusion
I remember when this film was released on HD back in the days of the format war and have been looking forward to its eventual release on UHD. Paramount does a bang-up job with the A/V presentation and film is timeless in its entertainment value. Highly recommended.

Literally just ended watching this 4K
Love this movie. One of my favs. Not a great looking picture. But the audio was a great improvement. That grenade on the tin roof :)
