Title: NAD T-777 Receiver no longer turning on
Post by: tripplej on April 02, 2022, 11:39:53 PM
Hi guys,

I have a 2013 built NAD T-777 (https://nadelectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/T777v3_eng_OM_v14FE.pdf) and today all of a sudden, it will not stay on.

Initially earlier today, when I press the power button, it turns on for a second and then turns off.

I tried unplugging trying different power outlets but same story.

Now, after several hours of being off, I tried to turn it on and nothing. It will not even turn on for a second..

Is it worth getting it fixed or better to get a replacement?

any ideas?

Sounds like the power supply has gone bad. These days you're better off just buying a new (or lightly used) replacement. The cost of repairs are generally not a wise investment.

I checked NAD website and they list one place here that is authorized for repairs.

I can check and see how much it costs to determine the problem and then how much to actually replace the broken part and labor costs.

It maybe cheaper than getting a new unit..

Getting a new one is an option but it is very expensive option to get something similar to what I have now.

I have 2 subs and 7 speakers so I would need 7.2 system..

I also have 1080p TV.

Would want lots of hdmi ports.

Any recommendations for new one?

Are you handy with a digital multimeter and soldering iron? I bet there's a YouTube video that covers avr power supplies.

So many choices....Denon, Marantz, NAD, Anthem...it would come down to what features you are looking for. From a connection standpoint, you'll be way ahead of a 2013 AVR, that's for sure. I had a NAD amp years ago and liked it, but I'm not sure about their AVR performance these days. It's been a few years since I've auditioned any AVRs, but I'm sure others can chime in like Mike and Chris.

Around here, most electronics repair shops charge a diagnostic fee, around $50, which goes towards the repair if you approve the quote.

If you are looking for a new receiver, 7.2, I recently have had extensive time with the Marantz 7011, the Marantz 8015 and the anthem1140. I will give you more details if you’d like but both my brother and I really like the Marantz and really did not like the anthem. First, the anthem is Designed for surround sound for movies. If you like two channel. Music, cds, sacds, streaming, or FM The anthem unit fails badly. My brother replaced the 7011 in his system with it and I did in mine. We both listen to 2 channel music and couldn’t stand it. The Marantz was so much better. Also the Marantz was so much easier to set up a news. We were both frustrated by the inability to easily switch imputes and equalise.

The anthem, I must admit, gave very good sound for movies. It did sound somewhat better than the Marantz 7011.However, the Marantz 8015 more than equaled in Anthem due to it’s more powerful outputs. Please feel free to ask me any other questions.

My brother traded in his 7011 so I gave him mine and he resold the anthem. I used another anthem for my upstairs system, attached to my LGTV and was dissatisfied. I then got the 8015 unit. I think it’s terrific. Very easy to use and very good sound for both movies and two channel sound.

Thanks Barry for the recommendations.

I will see how much it costs first to fix if possible and then will look at other units for replacement if needed.

Thanks David and Tracy for the assistance.

I left out one important fact. As I mentioned the anthem was built for video not so much audio. While the Marantz has this the anthem does not: an FM radio and streaming capabilities.

Barry, which one has more hdmi ports?

Seems, I have more outside things connecting now to the home theater receiver!

It’s not under warranty? Have you contacted NaD

no, it is 2013 and the warranty  (https://support.nadelectronics.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000159048-Warranty-for-NADelectronics-com)is only 2 years max so it is way out of support.

I contacted the authorized repair folks and they still support NAD equipment so will take it there and see what happens.

My wife doesn't want me to spend the big $$$ now so will have to band aid what I can now.

I went to the only authorized NAD service center in the entire city which luckily wasn't too far (30 min drive).. I had to pay $199 for the diagnostic check with the price applicable to the total price..

They will let me know once they go thru the details..

Agreed...I'm not sure I would have paid that for a 9 year old AVR. The technology moves too quickly. $200 goes a long way towards a replacement--even an used one that's a year or two old.

$199 diagnostic fee? ?????????

My bet is power supply capacitors....... under $10 in parts.
Title: Re: NAD T-777 Receiver no longer turning on
Post by: tripplej on April 04, 2022, 07:44:31 PM
yeah, let me see what happens.

Problem is that we don't have the funds to replace the AVR with one that is equivalent to the NAD..

When I purchased that 2013 NAD, it was $3K..

Too many other expenses that have already been allocated unfortunately with financial funds.

When it rains, it pours sometimes.

Worst case, if it is too costly to repair, I just lost $200 and will have to live with TV speakers for time being..

Let's hope the final bill is not too bad.

I completely understand. Hopefully it's a quick (and cheap) fix.

If it comes down to it, Accessories4less has good deals on clearance electronics, last year's models etc. They carry primarily Denon, Marantz, Yamaha for HT AVRs. You can get a very solid couple years ago Marantz for 1/2 of that NAD.

Good to know. Thanks.

Back then in 2013, I saved up over 8-10 years to get my home theater system updated. I researched everywhere and checked all the forums and that particular NAD was the top dog to get.

Prior to that, I had a very old prehistoric Sony AVR which was from the early 2000s or late 90s.

Now, well, times have changed. I don't have the means anymore so have to start saving again...

Such is life. lol. A roller coaster of fun with lots of ups and downs! lol.

I just picked up my unit.

Apparently, when they ran the diagnostics, nothing was found. They ended up resetting it back to factory defaults and now it all works. Powers on and off without any issues.

I didn't have to pay anything extra.

I have the unit and it will take me sometime to get it reconnected to the other systems but at least it is back home and hopefully will not act up again.

Thanks all for the help.

Next time, I will have to research a new AVR..

yeah, I will have to investigate via the manual how I can reset everything back to factory, hopefully it is defined there.

I was able to setup the speakers as well as all the hdmi hookups: got sound and video for sony ps4, nintendo switch, oppo blu ray player, google ultra chromecast as well as Nintendo Wii U.

But, I can't get sound for TV broadcast channels. Video is there but no sound.

I have one hdmi cable going from the TV to the receiver, hdmi out port so this is good for all the connections, sound and video.

I also have one coaxial digital audio cable to the receiver, digital audio out doesn't do anything and I tried digital audio in as well but no luck.

All wires are connected, nothing missing...

TV has external speakers selected yet no sound.

Any ideas?

Is ARC (Audio Return Channel) activated in the AVR (and on the TV)?

I have no idea about ARC (Audio Return Channel), whether it is activated or not.

Hi David and Tracy,

With your help, I was able to resolve this issue.

First, ARC was turned off on the TV.

Below is what I did for the TV.

Turned Speaker input to Receiver.

I then went to advanced settings and turned on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) to on

I then went to advanced settings and set Audio Format to PCM

Now, the TV was setup correctly.

I then went to NAD. My remote died even with new batteries, so had to manually go thru the display screen which is a pain to do.

Within the Control setup, I turned on CEC. Everything here as turned off initially (factory reset, I assume).

When researching ARC and NAD, I found that it uses Source 3. Within the settings, source 3 was set to HDMI 3 which I used to plug in an external unit and it worked correctly. But to get ARC corrected, I had to leave HDMI 3 blank for time being and set Digital audio to Coaxial 1.

Below is the back settings on The NAD. No input on HDMI 3.Coaxial Digital audio in on input 1 and of course my HDMI from the TV is on HDMI1 out.

Now, when I go to antenna tv to watch local channels on the TV, I just switch the receiver to source 3 and I get sound.

Thanks once again guys.

Always learn something new everyday!

Would you believe, my NAD died again!

This time, I am not going to fix it.

Will look for replacement by next black friday.

For time being, I got a 7 input and 1 output hdmi switcher (https://www.amazon.com/Switcher-Selector-Support-Control-Nintendo/dp/B0B64SDC62/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=10+in+1+out+hdmi+switch&qid=1675780759&s=electronics&sprefix=10+in+1+out+hdmi%2Celectronics%2C141&sr=1-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18630bbb-fcbb-42f8-9767-857e17e03685), will use the TV speakers for time being.

So far so good, my oppo, ps4, ps5, wii U, Wii Switch, chromcast all work.

I have to wait a bit to save money.

With all the past holiday purchases, end of year property taxes, etc. and upcoming Income tax (I will have to pay), as well as some unexpected medical bills that I have to cover, I don't have the disposable income to buy something now.

Hopefully by next black friday, I can get something. :)

Damn, sorry to hear that, really sucks. Modern electronics esp. from a name brand like NAD are usually pretty reliable so it's frustrating to get what appears to be a lemon.

I have come to realize, no matter which brand or which price point it is at, high, low, medium, all will fail eventually!

Just enjoy what you have for the time you have it and save for the eventual replacement!

:)

Plus, I can't blame NAD.. I bought this unit in late 2012/early 2013 so it has lasted as long as it could!
