CODA: Available on Streaming: A Review
CODA strands s for Child of Deaf Adults. This is a story of a family of four, the mom and dad and their oldest male child are deaf. Their youngest daughter, Ruby, played by Emilia Jones can hear and can sing.
This is a family picture made for families and is about family. It shows how families members depend on each other, need each other and struggle with each other.
Ruby’s family make their living and support their family by fishing. While there are obstacles to this job for everyone, reh movie points out the unique problems the family has because they cannot hear. So Ruby is an important part of their group. But Ruby likes to sing and wants to go off to college to make it her profession. This causes conflict in the family.
How they deal with it, what each has to sacrifice has familiar rings to it. That is, many families go through struggles like this.
I rate this movie, “very good.” It is interesting and compelling to watch. While all the actors are good Emilia Jones is a standout. She must use sign language with her family and she seems so comfortable using it. All the main characters, the Mom, Dad and brother are developed well and realistically. (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant.

I found this movie outstanding. My favorite for best picture. One of the best films I have seen in a long time.
