I'm building my first dedicated space. It will be used as our family room, so it is a semi dedicated theater or media room. Dimensions are 30x18x9. The front drops down 14". My budget isn't real large, but if you have some constructive criticism or ideas let me know.
Some features:
7.1.4 layout
2.35:1 screen (130" wide)
12 feet to seats
dedicated ducted minisplit
equipment room outside of room
1/2" OSB with 5/8" drywall

Nice size and nice start. Wire for six atmos speakers, front, middle and back. You might not be able to do six right off the bat, unless going really high end on the processor. 9.2.6 is going to come down in price, so I would wire for it. :)

I wired for 9.1.6. It will be out of my budget for a long time. I have about $120k for the theater, laundry room, bedroom, garage, and storage closet (complete addition 1800 sqft). I'm thinking I'll have about $8-10k for speakers, AVR, and projector/screen. I do have some Klipsch RF82II and RC62II that will be carried over. My room will be filled with slow upgrades over time. I'm thinking about the Epson 5040ub, Volt 10lx surrounds, and 2-4 Ultimax 18's to start right now.

I wired for 9.1.6. It will be out of my budget for a long time. I have about $120k for the theater, laundry room, bedroom, garage, and storage closet (complete addition 1800 sqft). I'm thinking I'll have about $8-10k for speakers, AVR, and projector/screen. I do have some Klipsch RF82II and RC62II that will be carried over. My room will be filled with slow upgrades over time. I'm thinking about the Epson 5040ub, Volt 10lx surrounds, and 2-4 Ultimax 18's to start right now.
If you can, wire for more than one sub.

I have two separate 1.25 inch diameter conduit runs from the equipment closet to the front wall. I think I can fit enough for 16 subs. 8)

Thanks, it is actually starting to look real. I made one of the stairs today and it was pretty cool walking up and down from each level. It's coming together.

I bought a Graco X5 paint sprayer. I primed the drywall today. It was fun, messy, and hard to see. I am amazed at how much paint comes out. 8)

More progress. Painted the first coat on the ceiling. The square vents are two of four AC supplies. They are 14" square. All the conduit supplies the theater and some POE cameras. The biggest 1.5" conduit runs to the projector. The next two are 1.25" and go to the front stage. The others 0.75" flex conduit go to the bed speakers. The weird plug below the conduit is a Midlite ‑ IEC46W that connects the UPS to the projector. I still haven't picked out the projector but I'm leaning towards the Epson 5040ub right now.

A look towards the back of the room. The conduit sticking out the ground is for the bar/table in the back. It provides power and a separate run back to the equipment room. Double doors lead into the rest of house. In the second picture you can see one of two returns. I don't remember the box size but there are two 14" return flex ducts (one per box). Paired with the Fujitsu ducted minisplit it should be silent.

Finally finished the stairs to the lower level. I chose to use a mixture of Insteon, Philips Hue, Logitech Harmony, and Amazon Echo to control the room. I have been playing with this combo for a little over six months and like it.

Spraying is faster than rolling, but if you do not backroll the paint, then if you ever have to touch up the paint, it will show. If you backroll after spraying, then you do future touch up.

I've been watching The Idaho Painter on Youtube for tips. I spray the first coat and roll the next. Seems to be working well. I've been working on electrical all week. I'm getting tired of making up outlets and switches. Only about 20 left of the 75.

That is tedious work. But it sounds like you are getting there !

My 8 doors came in. I've installed 2 doors in the past and neither were great. I spent a lot of time and couldn't never get them perfect. I've been debating about hiring a finish carpenter but I wanted to take another stab at door hanging. I watched a bunch of videos on Youtube and came across This Is Carpentry's channel. I followed the video (link below) and installed 2 doors in about 2 hours and they are perfect.

Good deal. Doors can be a pain. I installed plenty of doors working in construction, but I still hired a finish carpenter I knew -he was faster !
You must be getting closer to being finished if the doors are going in. :)

Not much progress has been made on the theater lately. I've been trying to finish the garage, concrete driveway, electrical, and cabinetry in the office. Making progress though, which feels nice! :)

Once you learn what you are doing, it will go much faster. I have installed 100's of doors. With youtube, you too can become an expert. :)

My mother in law and aunt have been helping paint. They got the first coat on the walls. I'm hoping to install more doors and start some of the trim.

Got more work done this weekend. I also got a new Nexus 6p phone and I'm enjoying the panorama shots, they seem to stitch together nicely.
I am still looking at sealing options for the entrance. I'm leaning towards drop down seals, threshold with neoprene lip, neoprene gasket seals all around including astragal. I'm thinking a flush bolt top and bottom on the non active door should be good.
If anyone has any advice or comments let me know. The doors have been a little difficult, especially with the budget.

Sealing off double doors is always a problem. Also to get the seals tight enough to seal off well, can make the door harder to close.

Sound isolation for the theater. You use pretty much the same things we used to use on isolation rooms in hospitals, before hospitals started using powered sliding glass doors for isolation rooms. Auto drop bottoms, on double doors and surface mount seals on all three sides of the frame.

Zero International has some good products and information about sound control. I'm still undecided on what pieces I'll be using but a double door and a single door start adding up quickly in price. I really hate budgets....

You do all that they show there and I can pretty much guarantee you that you will have to push the door shut. With all of that, it is even hard to get a commercial door closer to fully close the door and latch.

I don't have that issue, as my theater is in the 2nd floor over our garage. With a solid core door, and insulated 2 x 6 walls everywhere ( interior included ), not much sound escapes ( other than some exterior light fixture vibrating occasionally during wars movies ) !

Thanks Mike. My plan so far is to add drop down seals, neoprene astragal, and light weight weather striping to see how it sounds. I'm not looking for the holy grail. Just keep some of the noise out of bedrooms which are about 40 feet away. Later on I might add the heavy duty door seals if I feel I need a little more. I know the doors are going to be the weak link in isolation.

Craig, that's good to hear. My existing house is 2x4 walls, 1/2 inch drywall and stucco with insulation and when I go outside I can faintly hear a demo scene playing at -5 volume which is about as loud as I like to listen to. I'm not expecting the world, just something decent.

Depends on how much bass you have. I also have 2x6 walls and solid core doors, but the bass escapes, especially the vibration from the 7-18's in the room.

There's just me and my wife, and I rarely watch movies when she would be trying to sleep in the master bedroom and not watching herself. Bass doesn't seem to make it that far, even when the room shakes. That you can hear outside - a little. I have no close neighbors though !

After I talked to a few guys online with big subwoofers and they said there was no containing bass at or near reference levels. I chose to save money and go for a medium level approach. I decoupled the bedroom and the main wall the existing side of the house best I could. insulated all cavities. Added a layer of half inch OSB under all the 5/8" drywall and caulked all the seams. California has some tough building codes and they didn't like some of my proposals. One of my goals was to be able to watching tv at -20 without waking up my wife. I should be able to accomplish this. I'm also planning on bass shakers in the chairs.
Currently I have 2 12" Dayton Ultimax. But I'd like to have 4-12 18" subs in the future. This theater will be more of a work in progress due to budgets. Which is fine because I enjoy tinkering and working on it as much as I love watching movies.

Yep, if you have really big subs that go deep, like single digits, almost impossible to completely contain, if doing reference levels.

Fired up the electrical for the first time. Sure feels good to see that progress. I just need to finalize the light choice for the cans. I'm looking for something cheap, 3000k color, and good dimming.

There is going to be acoustic panels in the tray part. The rest is the final colors. They look darker in person. The color is Sherwin Williams web gray. Google images show better images of the color.

Finishing up the Fujitsu ducted minisplit air conditioner. Installed the outdoor unit, pressurized the system, and fired it up for the first time last night. Can't believe how quiet the system is. With the fan on max airflow I still couldn't hear it.
Pretty cool seeing all the time and money spent working well.

How expensive was the Fujitsu mini split? Did you get it specifically for the HT or is it part of a multiple room setup?

I actually bought a ducted unit and 2 ductless units as part of the complete renovation. The ducted unit is the Fujitsu 18RLFCD. I recall paying about $1,800 for the indoor and outdoor unit. Then add lineset $150, ducting $200, custom manifold $100ish in materials, and through in another $500 for good measure for all the other little things I bought.
So I have about $2,750 into it but not counting any labor since a friend of mine helped me do it. I'd guess there was 15-30 hours to get this thing done how I wanted. I'm not sure what a local HVAC company charges per hour.
Now that I've sat down in the theater with it running, it was 103 degrees here today, and I cannot hear a sound from it while running full speed it really is an awesome system. I've only had it two days and it's one the best parts of the room. Right now I have a 5.1 setup in my living room and the HVAC is loud. Audyssey said it's too loud to calibrate. I notice my wife will turn up the volume when it kicks on. I think she will be thrilled about this system.
I looked at the multi-head units but I noticed they lacked efficiency compared to the single units. My other two are wall mounts and 33 seer. Out electricity is getting pricey out here at $0.33 kWh and it is supposed to go up again so I am trying to find energy efficient products.

You are using the ducted unit in the HT? Wouldn't a ductless have been better for the HT... I am assuming that means a ducted unit is ducted to the outside, and a ductless wouldn't. The only reason I am saying this is wouldn't a ductless unit be better for sound loss...in other words, stop the sound from the HT from passing throughout the house due to the ducting, or am I confused as to what a ductless is?

I have a large room 31x18.5 and didn't think a single ductless minisplit would be as good as a ducted unit as far as cooling the room evenly goes. As for sound traveling through ducts, the ducts are only in this room. Since they are not connected to the rest of the house sound won't be able to travel to other rooms.

So there is no fresh air...just cooling the room with the sir from another part of the Room? I was wondering how I was going to cool my next HT, and if I can duplicate your setup, that sounds great.

Yes, I'm recirculating the air. I have room to add a fresh air from an adjacent room or outside, but I wanted to see how the air felt before looking at these options.

My new room might not have outside air...so I am thinking recirculating the air, and using air cleaner on it. This might work for me.

- Brightness (dynamic mode would be nice for parties and events)
- Lag
I'm going to build the screen myself to save some money. I'm torn between saving money with Center Stage UF and wanting the added brightness of Center Stage XD so I can run the projector in a quieter mode in case I need the lumens. I'm assuming I need/want at least 1100 lumens.
What do you guys think?

That's a big screen. You will want to run the Epson in one of the brighter modes for sure -

I'm thinking bright cinema mode most of the time. I did plan to mount the projector towards the front (closest to screen) of it's zoom range. Should help the brightness.

I guess I'll have to wait. Are the JVC 420 going to be on sale soon since the 440 is coming out?
Also, what are the pros and cons to using a hanging projector mount vs a shelf (box) mounted to the ceiling?

A shelf means no mount needed, so that's one advantage.

Thanks Mike. That is a good deal. I bought an Epson 5040ub from you a couple months back when there was the $200 visa promotion. Just opened it and got it hung. Pretty awesome picture. I didn't see the Visa gift card in the box anywhere. :(
