Plot
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto, with all-new songs by award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the tale of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family living in a magical house in the mountains of Colombia. But when Mirabel, the only ordinary Madrigal, discovers the magic surrounding their home is in danger, she may be her family’s last hope.
My Thoughts
Now that my kids are grown the anticipation for animated films has dropped quite a bit. I knew nothing of this movie before I received the digital code in my inbox but knowing that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the songs, I was willing to give it a shot.
The first act is a bit slow as it sets up the story and while the first couple of songs are decent, they didn’t grab me on my first viewing until “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” came on and I haven’t been able to get the tune out of my head. The song has some great lyrics and is quite funny. Overall, the story is a bit predictable but that’s OK given the target audience and it’s the type of film that the little ones can watch over and over.
I streamed the film via Vudu in UHD with Atmos audio and in all honesty, I’m not sure if I could tell the difference between the digital stream and an actual UHD disc. Granted, the material is easy to reproduce since it’s animated, but I was impressed with the depth and color saturation. The Atmos audio wasn’t particularly active in the overhead effects, but the front soundstage is very engaging and the musical numbers encompass the room.

Conclusion
I’m sure when Disney brought this out, they were hoping to have another Frozen to fatten the bottom line. Unfortunately, it doesn’t reach the level of that film, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t have its moments. We don’t have any grandkids yet but I’m sure when we do this is the type of film they’d want to watch when visiting. Recommended for those with younger kids.
