Title: LOTR & The Hobbit in 4K
Post by: Paul Heroy on October 14, 2020, 12:24:20 AM
Missed this last week but it was finally confirmed for Dec 1 release. Bill Hunt's writeup: https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/100720-0900

There's a big 6 pack of both LOTR & Hobbit trilogies coming in summer 2021, too.

I am ambivalent at best on the Hobbit especially the final movie. Way too violent for that book. I may just get the LOTR set and be done with it.

I should be getting review copies. I'm looking forward to LOTR, but I'm not sure how well the VFX shots will hold up in 4K. The Hobbit is a different story....I'm not a fan of the films at all (way too long and they drag).

Exactly what I was thinking.

Definitely looking forward to reviews including yours, David. Even more than video upgrades, I'm really hopeful that the Atmos / immersive audio is done really well with a lot of activity - there are obviously ample opportunities for that!

Haven't seen that - sounds very promising! I have to think LOTR being such a huge and special legacy for him he'll make sure it takes every advantage of all the format's potential - HDR, Atmos etc. Really looking forward to seeing more details and reviews soon.

This is the version that I'd wish Warner would put on 4K:  https://tolkieneditor.wordpress.com/

I wish they would bring out all the seasons of 24, but have each season cut as one real time 24 hour episode.

I've only seen the first LOTR film once. I figure this is the time to finally watch the entire trilogy.

I read the books, and I liked the books much better. But I'm going to take another crack, especially with them on 4K.

the cool thing is they did a bunch of small details that were in the books to make it as close as possible

I'm definitely interested, but at $89.99 for each trilogy, I think I'll wait a while for the prices to come down!

Luckily I'm only interested in the LOTR trilogy, but I'll still wait a bit. It may or may not drop in price. It might just sell out like the Columbia 4K Collection did.

Damn it, after reading Bill Hunt's initial reaction to LOTR on 4K, I ordered it !

Bill Hunt on Twitter: "The Ride of the Rohirrim in 4K with HDR and Atmos is the single greatest thing I have ever experienced in my home theater. And I do NOT say that lightly. I may just have leapt out of my seat. ;) https://t.co/B1jw6IOl5A" / Twitter (https://twitter.com/BillHuntBits/status/1331433221112795138)

I agree with him...it looks absolutely great and the Atmos is outstanding!

I picked up the hobbit 4k when it went down $69.99 on Amazon. I had a few promotional credits I had to use up before expiring.

Next up is the game of thrones set in 4k.

I know, most folks here are "disc only" but Apple has a good bundle sale on Middle Earth. 6 movie extended edition collection (4K, Atmos, DV) is $39.99. The extended edition trilogies are $24.99 each. I might compare the LOTR UHD disc vs iTunes and grab The Hobbit this way. I feel much better about $25 for that one if it's close enough on the audio side, than $70 much less $90 for discs.

Edit: The individual movies are currently $7.99. So it's $1 less to buy them individually. Doh!

Watched The Hobbit Unexpected Journey last night...Video was reference quality...much cleaner than Fellowship of the Ring...I’m watching them in the recommended order Fellowship of the Ring followed by the Hobbit trilogy and then the remaining 2 movies...Just wanted to comment The Hobbit was reference, quite amazing restoration actually...

Because of the way The Hobbit was shot, it really didn't need a lot of restoration (the Blu-ray's looked outstanding when released). LOTR is a different story :)
