I've had 3 GIK Acoustic 242 Acoustic Panels in my theater for several years now. They made a noticeable difference putting them at the first reflection points.

Gridfusor ceiling diffusers - in the raw and with a coat of Rosco Velour Black.

Here they are installed. Did some tests tonight - these made a HUGE improvement on sound at the seats. Dialog is crisper / clearer, and the room sounds larger. Bass traps with scatter plates are adding to that larger sounding room effect I'd bet.

I'm on vacation the week of Thanksgiving. Maybe sometime early in that week. Would that work for you?
Also, how did you affix them to the ceiling?

I'm gone that week unfortunately. I used double faced adhesive pads, but I don't trust those long term, so I toe nailed them at an angle with 2 1/2" finishing nails, into the drywall. 6 nails per panel. I tried the T pins they recommended, but they are too small and didn't inspire confidence ! The adhesive pads make getting them in place easy. The nails make sure they stay there !

Watched " Lucy " on 4K BR last night with friends that have never seen it, and one of the guests said he was amazed at how loud the soundtrack was ( reference + 1.5 ) but the sound never hurt his ears. And he felt the bass in his chest - haha ! The bass / LFE and sound in general has really improved. I think I'm finished. For now, other than maybe some further calibration.

So, I understand the need to put absorption in the first order reflections.
Some questions:
1. where should diffusers go?
2. Have the rules for diffuser placement changed with the Dolby Atmos spec?
3. I've seen that most (?) folks put diffusers mainly in the back wall. I don't think I'll be putting acoustic panels in my ceiling. Would that change where else I should put diffusers?

I put diffusers on my ceiling based on recommendations from the guys at GIK. I'd reach out to them and see what they recommend.

You may want to try experimenting, if possible.
For example, some of us have found that if you have speakers with good dispersion not absorbing the first reflection point actually adds a good amount of spaciousness.

Interesting. Yes, experimentation is in order, although I'd need to get panels to start with, and I'd also like to minimize any drywall work. I'm not thinking of doing the ceiling for now (ceiling paneling would seem hard to experiment).
