Thor 4K review
Thor opens with battles in a Frost World and has many scenes there. This is the one area that the 4K does not help. Those scenes look, maybe deliberately, color drained and not quite as clear. I enjoyed the movie and give it three out of four stars.
The scenes on Asgard are just beautiful and imaginative and the 4K brings it to life. The surround is very good and enhances much of the movie.
Briefly, this movie gives us the origin of Thor. Born a god in Asgard, a place where magic and science are the same, Thor grows up expecting to be king, but has not developed the compassion and humanity needed for the job. His father Odin banishes him to Earth until he can develop into a leader. On Earth Thor meets Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman.
Loki, Thor’s adopted step brother launches an elaborate plan to kill Thor on Earth and take over Asgard.
There are two stars to this movie for me, Thor played by Chris Hemsworth, who gives a fine performance that will only grow in this series. Loki is played by a terrific Tom Hiddleston, who, in many scenes steals the movie.
This is, perhaps, my least favorite series in the MCU because the characters, with the exception of Loki, and the storyline are furthest from the actual comic of the 1960s. Originally, Dr. Don Blake, a “puny” lame doctor discovers a walking stick that when struck to ground transformed him into the Norse God, Thor, complete with many of his memories. As the comic developed, Blake becomes more and more Thor and less and less Blake. And his adventures become less on Earth and more in other realms. Jane Foster was not a scientists as shown in the movies, but his nurse. It took years, and a great storyline, where Don Blake discovers that he was always Thor. Odin had put him on Earth as a doctor to learn about compassion. As the storytellers, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby saw that fans appreciated the other realms stories more than the traditional Earthbound one, Thor breaks up with mortal Jane. On Earth Jane didn’t mind making dinner, but taken to Asgard she had to learn how to kill dinner. Not her favorite thing to do. Thor gets it on with another Asgardian, Sif, now also a warrior.
In the Marvel Universe we see here two Infinity stones, one stored in Asgard and the Cosmic Cube held by Nick Fury. We are introduced to SHIELD agent Sitwell and there is a reference to SHIELD interfering with a scientist working with Gamma rays. (the Hulk Movie.) We are also introduced to Dr. Eric Selvig, played by Stellan Skarsgård who will play a large role in the Avengers movie.
