Iron Man in 4k
First, I need some input: I do not have a Dolby Atmos system, but a very good system otherwise. I am hoping that when I discuss the Audio, in this case a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 disc, that that will be of benefit to many. Please let me know.
In the comics, Iron Man was wounded in Viet Nam, in 1963, not Afghanistan as shown in the movie. But we won’t run out of wars. This origin was very close to the original, with Downey giving Stark a compelling personality. In the comics, Stark needed a complete iron chest covering to keep his heart beating, which cuts down on his dating and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) marries Happy.
There are wonderful action sequences here, the plot is easy to follow and it does have a giant comic book battle at the end. But the performances, especially by Downey, are the reason to watch the movie. We see a man grow and change.
The video was a step up from the Blu Ray. The colors are noticeably brighter and more defined and I especially appreciated the greater flesh tones. I also found the details, like when Tony is in the sand, to be so much better. When there is florescent lighting and other lighting or “bright” effects like repulsor rays for Iron Man’s armor, they looked great and sharp and full of color.Some of the flying sequences could have been better.
As part of the MCU SHIELD is introduced here, with Agent Colson and there is an end scene with Nick Fury with an inference of the Avengers initiative. Also, the voice of Javits is played by Paul Bettany, who will become the Vision.
The soundtrack was wonderful, one of the best I have heard. But I tried an experiment. I switched my Oppo in this case from “Auto” which gave me a bitstream, to PCM, ¾ of the way through the movie. I did it just hear the difference. As I understand it, bitstream is processed mostly in my pre-amp, but PCM is processed in the OPPO. (I may be wrong and I am sure someone will correct me). The PCM seemed better, it was more dynamic and had better separation. Gosh, it sounded great with more sound coming from my rear speakers. I’ll have to try it a bit more before I make a determination.
