JVC Announces 4K/HDR Compatible DLP Projector
With 3,000 Lumen Laser Light Source

LONG BEACH, Calif., August 30, 2019 – JVC today announced a new 4K/HDR compatible home theater projector with a laser light source that provides high resolution, high brightness and long life. The new JVC LX-NZ3 also features JVC’s Auto Tone Mapping to automatically deliver the best possible HDR images.The new LX-NZ3 uses a BLU-Escent laser light source to achieve 3000 lumens brightness and long life, which makes the projector an ideal choice for use in living rooms and family rooms.
Main Features
Thanks to the high brightness, a fully darkened room is not required to achieve excellent image quality, allowing the projector to be used in typical living and family room settings with high ambient light. Regardless of the room design, the projector delivers high quality HDR images with wide dynamic range.
The new projector supports HDR content, both HDR10 adopted for UHD Blu-ray and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) adopted for broadcast cable, satellite and live TV. Furthermore, the LX-NZ3 automatically switches to the optimal picture mode based on the signal detected so users can enjoy HDR content without the need for manual adjustments.
HDR10 content brightness varies greatly from one release to another. To optimize performance based on content, the LX-NZ3 is equipped with Auto Tone Mapping that reads content brightness metadata (Max CLL / FALL *2) and automatically adjusts brightness settings based on that information.
* 1: In the case of content that does not contain mastering information, it will refer to a fixed value or need manual adjustment.* 2: MaxCLL (Maximum Content Light Level), MaxFALL (Maximum Frame Average Light Level)
The LX-NZ3 features lens shift with a wide ± 60% vertical, ± 23% horizontal range, and is equipped with a 1.6x zoom lens that supports a projection distance of 9.8 feet to 15.7 feet for a 100-inch screen. This flexibility allows placement in a wide range of environments without the need for keystone correction, which can degrade image quality.
With mechanical apertures, there is some delay when adjusting light output, but JVC’s laser light source can control light output instantaneously, so dynamic brightness adjustment is possible with little or no delay. By controlling the output of the laser according to the brightness of the scene, the LX-NZ3 can reproduce images closer to reality. Moreover, when a complete black signal is input, contrast of : 1 can be achieved by controlling the laser output.
The LX-NZ3’s compact size is in part thanks to its use of the 0.47-inch Digital Micromirror Device, which allows the projector to deliver high resolution 4K images from a device that can be easily placed on a shelf, on a table or discreetly installed in a living or family room.
JVC offers the LX-NZ3 in either black or white cabinets, so users can choose a color that best works with their room.
The JVC LX-NZ3 will be available in late November for $3,699.95.

I really wasn't expecting to see another DLP-based model from them. I kind of wish we could see a laser 1080p e-shift model on the bottom end. I'm assuming, without economies of scale, it may be impractical to manufacture 1080p DiLA panels for just one model? This model seems to fill the void where the RS540 was at in price.

A model with a bulb would have been fine for me! I'm sorry I missed the end of the line of the e-shift. I'm not a movie person. I bought and tried to watch way too many movies and never saw the end of some of them! Even one recommended by Craig!!!!!!! :o I primarily watch 3 hours of Motogp racing (19 times a year) live where ever it is in the world. I now have 700-800 hrs on the Sony 45es that I bought from Mike a few years ago. I bought it because they upgraded Motogp streaming from 720p to 1080p.

There are still a couple of eshift projectors available. Although this new JVC would be a good projector to watch sports on.

This might be a good projector for someone in your situation. This unit is geared more towards living room installations where a ton of light is needed to kill ambient light. It's not meant to serve as competition to their 4K DiLA home theater projectors. Sports and brighter APL content should look excellent on this projector.

Yep. This should be an excellent family room projector. Especially for sports and TV.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a black room with the lowest LRV paint I could find locally. When I turn on all the lights in the room I still can't see a damn thing in the corners on each side of the screen (I'll be 69 in the next day or two with MATURE vision)! :) 8) With all lights off it's a black pit with a screen floating in a black abyss! ;)

The projector before the Sony 45es was a Sharp DT-400 which had a motorized zoom and focus and a two position iris. The next projector WILL have a motorized zoom and focus and an adjustable iris!

In that case something with better black levels is in order. There are RS540's still available !

Why do we need another low contrast DLP laser projector?? We need more high contrast laser projectors with a lower pricetag.

JVC isn't going to offer that at a low price point until they have to. Sony and/or Epson needs to offer JVC competition first.

Epson first has to step onto the native 4K field. Wish they would hurry up and do so.

I currently have a 5050UB here for review. Their eshift system does a very good job like JVC's did. I can understand why they're waiting. The cheapest native 4K projector is still $2000 more than the 5050UB. No one is forcing their hand in releasing a native 4K unit.

I got to see the NZ3 for a little bit at CEDIA. JVC says this is really meant for media rooms, dens and living room applications where there might be a bit of ambient light or if the room is poorly treated. They aren't intending it to be for a dedicated theater, though, obviously, you can use it in one if you're after a laser based single chip DLP projector. They had it setup in a similar scenario with the front end of the booth being open to the show floor lights. Despite this, the image still looked good. The new .47" DMD its using does a really good job getting essentially 4K resolution on screen. Contrast was not DiLA good, but seems to be close in performance to the other .47" DMD based models I've seen. They're OEM'ing the projector, but I was told they are having the OEM do a few custom things you won't be able to see from other companies OEM'ing it. This might be a good alternative to the Optoma UHZ65.

Latency on the LX-NZ3 is about 3.5 frames.  This compares to 2 frames on the D-ILA with Low Latency switched on.
 
So, that works out to about 33ms-37ms on the D-ILA, and about 55ms-60ms on the DLP.

That's a mighty big screen. I don't think there have been any reviews yet to know what the calibrated lumens are.

Received this projector yesterday and set it up. I am shooting onto a 127" diagonal Stewart 1.3 gain FireHawk. Room has nearly white walls and does have a white ceiling, but room is pretty big, so walls and ceiling are not close to the screen. 

I measured the SPL of the projector from 3' away.

Eco I am getting around 23db.
Normal around 30db.
Variable Low around 30db
Variable High around 30db


This projector has a fair amount of vertical lens shift. It also has horizontal lens shift. +/- 60% vertical and +/- 23% horizontal lens shift. 3,000 lumens of laser light source and JVC's auto tone mapping of HDR. Also does full fade to black and has good throw range since the lens is 1.36 - 2.18. Most the cheap DLP's have little to none, vertical shift, no horizontal lens shift and a lens with hardly any throw range and of course, no auto tone mapping or laser.

Bright scenes look great. Dark scenes look like typical DLP contrast. With HDR, the projector is in high. I can hear the projector in quiet passages, but it is not very obtrusive. I should mention that I do not see any light scatter. The dynamic dimming system works well. I do not notice any pumping. For SDR content, using Eco mode, the projector is pretty quiet. Playing an HDR movie, I can hear the projector, especially in quiet passages of a movie, but it is low level background noise and does not seem very intrusive.

It didn't sound that loud at Cedia as was reported elsewhere. Granted, it's loud background noise wise on the floor at Cedia, but you numbers sound more like what I'd expect.

The NZ3 fixes most of the complaints I have with these newer DLP projectors. Most other models have poor placement flexibility. This model offers a wide throw ratio and a decent amount of lens shift. The inclusion of JVCs auto tonemapping software places this model at the forefront of what most DLP models offer for tonemapping. It's nice to hear the dynamic Iris isn't obtrusive. That's another notorious issue most of these DLP projectors have.

I was also pleasantly surprised that there was no light scatter. Most of the time when I put these type DLP's in my family room with light colored walls, I see light scatter on the walls surrounding the screen. Zero light scatter with this projector.

Streaming third season of Outlander on Netflix. Bright scenes look very good, but having owned many high native contrast projectors, I can easily tell what I am missing in dark scenes.

This projector is really bright - even in low ( Eco ) laser. I had a lot of light on in my theater, and at absolute minimum throw, I'm getting about 47 foot lamberts.

This would be great for sports! This is my A T & T U Verse HDTV cable - most of which looks pretty good. I removed the Lumagen from the chain, which makes it look a lot better. A better cable / streaming source - especially a 4K source, would look really good on this.

Using my Sper light meter, I measured 675 lux / 2752 lumens on Normal ( high ) laser, and about 460 lux / 1875 lumens on Eco ( low ) laser. You can easily watch HDTV with the lights on even in low laser on my 122" diagonal 16:9 Cima Neve screen. Low laser gives me 47 foot lamberts at my absolutely as close as can be mounting position.

The camera doesn't show how bright the lights were in my theater - I had them way higher than I normally would even eating and watching the Winter Olympics or Tour de France. For watching the NBA playoffs and other sports, this would be ideal.

When you are seated and it's covered in wine and water glasses, you don't notice it. You look over and beyond it. Where else are we going to have bottles of wine ? In our laps ?

I don't drink beer, and everyone with their own bottle in the cup holders would be weird.

You really only see the table like that if you are standing behind the couch ( which is where the camera tripod is ) looking down at the table. If you are standing there for a 2 1/2 hour movie, you will have bigger issues.

Last screen shots of Life of Pi Ultra HD Blu-ray on my Stewart Cima Neve screen. About 47 foot lamberts on the low laser setting. This would be good for watching the Super Bowl ! Not that I watch football ( I'll be skiing ).

I have a friend who currently has an Epson 5040 projector.   He is considering upgrading to a 5050.

The new JVC line is more than he wants to spend.

Do you think the LX-NZ3 would compare favorably to the Epson 5050?

Mostly HD Blu Ray and Directv.    He says he will start buying UHD discs soon.

He does have 3D Blu Rays.  Does this projector support 3D?

He does not have a dedicated room.  Not sure how dark he can get it.

I was really looking forward to purchasing this projector this year. However the first impressions of it seem to be bad.

I had this projector in my home for a month. For a family room projector with light colored walls and used on a gray based screen, the image was good.  It can't compete against a LCOS JVC in the dark scenes, but then neither can anything else.

I currently have an Epson 6500UB that now has the dreaded pink bar on the top.  Before I try to DIY repair it I'm looking for a replacement strategy if it goes horribly wrong.  Based on the current space (bonus room / play room) this looks like it has enough lumens to make it work for the blend of TV / movie / games we use the current Epson for.  Is there anything I'm missing here?  In a perfect world I'd go for a D-ILA on discount during a product change but that's probably 6 months out at this point?

We won't even know if there is a product change for nearly 7 months, so yes, it will be a while.

The sharpness and brightness of this projector is very good. I doubt anyone has any complaints there. :)
