Title: Lumagen Radiance Pro
Post by: AVSCraig on March 28, 2018, 12:11:14 PM
I now have a Lumagen Radiance Pro. Who else has one ? The scaling is excellent, and the next feature I really need to spend time with is the HDR tone mapping.

I'm planning on trying some more settings and features of the Radiance Pro this week. There is a lot this processor can do!

I would be super curious how the scaling and chroma performance is on the Pro, would it be possible to post some test results from your end, like this 1080P chroma zone plate upscaled to 4K.

I can see about test patterns, when I have more time.

Last night I experimented with my not so good A T & T U Verse cable TV - running it through the Radiance Pro, and having the pro scale it to 3840 x 2160. The picture definitely looks better. I also used the video delay feature. For some reason, U verse has had a lip sync issue - maybe because it's over the internet, and coming from a wireless modem. Never had that problem with Dish, but that was hard wired from the sat. dish on the roof. Anyway, it worked - better picture, audio is now sync'd !

I have the pro. Its a very powerful processor. I love that it is smart enough to know if the source
is rec2020 or 709 and chooses the associated memory on the fly. I also like they make it easy to build a custom gamma curve. The box can do almost anything, Lumagen is in a league all by themselves.
Anyone thinking of purchasing one I have no reservation recommending their products. Check with the sales team. I am pretty versed with the product I am glad to help if anyone has any questions.

Lumagen has added Dynamic HDR Tone Mapping for the Radiance Pro -

I'll hopefully have some time to download and experiment with this on Sat or Sunday this coming weekend. :)

So I tested the movie " Solo " on 4K Blu-ray. The Dynamic HDR Tone Mapping made a big difference. It was perfectly watchable on my system before, but it looks much better now.

Also have a Pro 4242 18G in / out; I set this up myself.  I load 3DLUTs generated in Lightspace for colour & gamma correction of my JVC DLA-X7900.  I also use the auto aspect detection, combined with a Raspberry Pi running a Python script to act as "glue" to drive the electric masks on my screen.   It's a nice setup, and I particularly like being able to use all the features on all my playback devices; colour correction and auto aspect within Netflix etc is really neat.  DTM does seem to be a useful step up, too.

So I have been told that using a tone map on top of a custom curve is a no no.  Interesting to hear that is what you are doing, successfully it sounds like.

Go to an unused user mode and try the tone mapping and see what it looks like. Granted it is not calibrated, but would be interesting to know if you see an improvement in the highlights.

I am using the dynamic tone mapping. I looks excellent. Chad's calibration is just a gamma curve. The dynamic tone mapping works with HDR or SDR BT2020. I just happen to be using it with my existing calibration. And I must say - it's an improvement over anything the Panasonic UB820 can do, by far. As you would expect !

Pretty sure Kris Deering was one of the people that mentioned you should not use tone mapping on top of a custom curve.  I know that when Chad B was at my place he also confirmed this which is why he did a calibration only (no arve tool curve) for the SDR 2020 setting he made to utilize my UB820s tone mapping.  Glad that it seems to be working for you though.

Pretty sure Kris Deering was one if the people that mentioned you should not use tone mapping on to of a custom curve.  I know that when Chad B was at my place he also confirmed this which is why he did a calibration only (no race curve) for the SDR 2020 setting he made to utilize my UB820s tone mapping.  Glad that it seems to be working for you though.
If I recall he said don't use the UB820 HDR optomizer and the new JVC RS1000 / 2000 etc. HDR optomizer at the same time.

Well, I either use both the calibrated HDR with Chad's custom curve and the Dynamic HDR Tone mapping in the Lumagen, or no Dynamic HDR tone mapping in the Lumagen at all, or I use the Dynamic Tone Mapping in the Lumagen but with an uncalibrated setting in the projector. Toggling it on and off shows what it does, and it does not detract from the base calibration or look bad in any way - only better in most scenes - like the entire beginning of Solo on 4K. I'm not using HDR - SDR2020, just HDR. I've played around with that a little, but to look as good as just using the custom gamma curves Chad installed would require a full blown re-calibration from someone like Kris. That isn't going to happen any time soon. From what I can see, the Dynamic Tone Mapping in the Lumagen just makes a great HDR picture even better. And it's going to have to stay like it is for the foreseeable future.

Is it possible to configure this for use with Projectors such that it has a constant output in terms of pixel resolution, depth, frequency, etc., to reduce HDMI handshakes to an absolute minimum?

For example when playing a Blu-ray, it will often switch from whatever the player itself is putting out, to the Blu-ray menus, coming attractions, etc.  Lots of switching back and forth.

I still have the RS400 and those 15-20 second handshakes occurring repeatedly when trying to simply start watching a movie are really irritating.

I realize everything else that the Lumagen brings to the table, but wondered about this particular issue.

Thanks.

(I do plan on upgrading to a newer JVC, with much faster sync times, but not until they provide proper anamorphic modes to use with the DCR lens.)

I believe so, and I think Kris Deering has mentioned doing this. Of course the newer JVC's have a faster sync time. And you could use the Lumagen to scale for 16:9 with the DCR lens with the new JVC's too ( see what a slippery slope this is ? )!! :-X

And yes, it is my understanding that this would fix the anamorphic problem for 16:9 content, but apparently it is unable to address working with 3D content.  This is a limitation inherent to the JVC, and not the Lumagen, according to what Kris has explained to me.

But yes, a *very* slippery slope.

I'm also anxiously waiting to see what the MadVR Envy will bring to the HDR Projector world, in terms of features, price, etc.

Hard to determine if that will take months, or years. And then who's going to be the beta tester. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later.

I know.  Madshi indicated in one post that something would be out this year, but who knows...

That's why I went ahead and bought a Panasonic UB-820 so I could take advantage of the Tone Mapping and Dynamic Range Sliders for my RS400.  I put it into use a couple of days ago, and am pleased so far.

I watched Justice League last night, and while I can't say it looked better than what I had previously with the Philips BDP-7501, it looked extremely good.  At the last I should be able to get more consistent output from one movie to another.  No DTM, obviously, which would be awesome, but at least a reasonable step in the right direction.

I haven't definitely decided against a Lumagen, but can wait a while to see how things evolve with both products, as well as on the Projector side of things.

Hey Guys. Meant to post something yesterday but I'm battling Bronchitis at the moment, so I've been trying to take it easy and limit my time up and at the computer. I received the latest beta of the dynamic tone mapping for the Lumagen Radiance Pro the other day and went through a barrage of testing. This coming soon update is nearly a completely new build from the ground up on the tone maps and how they are processed. So completely new curves, and updates to scene detection along with other misc. bug fixes. The new curves are fantastic with obvious benefits in near black and scene detection. I went through an onslaught of scenes that I've found to cause issues with tone mapping and even went through a lot of the scenes frequently mentioned in the MadVR thread for causing issues and didn't see any! The balance of the tone maps is fantastic regardless of what I threw at it. Without a doubt the best tone mapping and HDR Iv'e seen to date. Keep your eyes peeled! I expect this build to drop very soon.

I will be reaching out to my customers once it does on the update and what settings I recommend with the new tone mapping!

I have it connected. All video sources to Lumagen and then to projector. Only setup I have done is for anamorphic lens on a slide. Kris will be visiting on the 29th. I had an older active HDMI cable that I was not using, so have that cable connected from my prepro to HDMI input #2 on the RS3000. Since the info on this secondary HDMI is audio only, it does not require full 18G HDMI. So for the few times that I may want to see audio related on screen info, I can switch to input #2 on the RS3000 and see it.

New Lumagen firmware -

Beta 092019- Posted 093019  Replaced the DTM dynamic level (aka DLev) setting with a new more useful setting called dynamic pad (aka DPad). Added a new "adaptive" capability to DTM which allows DTM to adapt to light level changes between scene cuts. The adaptive feature can be enabled/disabled in the menu under Input: Options: HDR Setup: DynamicCtrls and defaults to enabled. Bugfix for DTM flickering issue. Bugfix for 2.40 input aspect with scale bias off was not as accurate as it should have been. Other small bugfixes. Please continue giving us your detailed feedback on issues via email at radiancepro_beta@lumagen.com (radiancepro_beta@lumagen.com) .

Update time ~1 minutes @230k from previous firmware

I updated the firmware on mine yesterday. Ended up being a little more trouble than I planned. I forgot that I loaned my windows laptop to my brother. So rather than drive the 30 mile round trip to get it. I took my Lumagen out of the rack to one of my PC's. Update went smooth and once back in system, changed the dev setting to 3. Watched a little bit of content and everything looked good. :)

Hey Mike,

This will be difficult to answer, but can you characterize the nature of the improvements you see with the Lumgan vs the JVC on its own with DTM?  I imagine one aspect of it would be eliminating the need to tweak settings on a per movie basis, but there's likely more to it than that.

And do you think you'd be able to consistently identify the differences in a Blind A/B test?  If so, what would the giveaways?  And would this be for all movies, or just the more 'difficult' ones?

Thanks.

I can't. Since I already had the Lumagen, I did not bother to download the update adding this to the JVC, because I can't really compare the two. The calibration for my JVC is in my Lumagen, so if I took out the Lumagen, I lose the calibration. So it would not be an apples to apples comparison.
With the Lumagen, I do zero tweaking.

Yes, Kris has compared and he posted some info. Kris said that JVC did a very good job, especially for a first attempt. Now keep in mind that Kris's comparison between JVC's DTM and the Lumagen was done before the last two firmware updates on the Lumagen, so the gap between the two has increased. But back when Kris did compare, Kris said often times the two looked very similar. Where there was separation was in the tougher scenes. But I will say, Lumagen's DTM has improved a lot with the last two firmware updates.

Thanks.
I've mentioned before that I think JVC did a great job with their new tone mapping, especially given their first shot at it. When I did my comparisons against the Lumagen here, it was with a much older build of the Lumagen tone mapping than what is available now. Even then the differences with "difficult" material were quite noticeable. I had a friend that has a JVC over to see as he was curious and he was surprised at how much better the Lumagen looked with content that really tests tone mapping. Because of the nature of JVC's tone mapping it also still requires user intervention to tweak (sometime on a movie by movie basis), whereas the Lumagen is set it and forget it. So not only are we talking about much better performance across the full range of tone mapping but also a much easier experience for the user.

This also doesn't take into account any of the other benefits the Lumagen brings to a video setup, which can be substantial depending on the setup.

Appreciate this, Kris.

With regard to what I put in bold in your comment, did he indicate specifically what about the image he found to be that much better than his JVC?

To be clear, I'm not doubting or challenging his observations, just wanting to understand how the superior performance of the Lumagen manifests itself.

For example, when I compared my prior RS400 to my current NX7, for HDR content, colors were dramatically more vivid, and the image had overall much better 'pop' (not a very precise term, to be sure!).  Resolution and detail wise, the differences were much more subtle, at least with actual content, not patterns, and at normal viewing distance.

So I have a reasonably good feel for what someone would expect going from an RS400 to NX7, and am trying to get a grasp on what a Lumagen, or Envy for that matter, would bring to the table (other than a 'set it and forget it' capability, which would be most welcome by itself).

I have been fiddling with the the Dpad setting after the most recent firmware update and have found that I prefer a setting of 1 over my previous setting of 3.  However I can't remember how to copy and save the change to all of my inputs.  Can anyone easily tell me the proper steps to do this?  I would contact Craig Round whom set up and calibrated my system, but I don't want to call him over the holidays.

Thanks in advance.

Play HDR source on each of the inputs that can receive an HDR source. Then hit left arrow on Lumagen remote and select a dpad of 1.

I thought there was a " save for all inputs " choice in the menu when doing a save ?

It was visible artifacts for the most part. He was seeing how detail was either clipped or not there with the JVC solution compared to the Radiance. He was also commenting on the strength of the highlights and naturalness of the image. He also noted how I never touched any setting on the Radiance and it always looked fantastic, but I had to go and manipulate the JVC from time to time to get the best result or something that approached the Radiance.

When I compared the JVC to the Radiance when the JVC firmware came out I was surprised how well JVC did. I would say somewhere around 70-80% of the performance with tone mapping overall, with some content looking better than that and some looking worse. But the Radiance has already gone through another rather major update in performance for HDR and has pulled even farther away, especially with the difficult stuff.

How much an end user will notice between a JVC and a Radiance obviously is subjective to the consumer and how fussy they are or how much they LOOK for problems rather than sit back and watch movies. I LOOK for issues ALL THE TIME, so I am overly critical. But I have yet to install or setup a Radiance that wasn't met with an overwhelming WOW from a client when it comes to how much better it looks than before. And I'd say that over 95% of my clients are using JVCs and Sonys, with more leaning toward JVC. I updated a client's Radiance yesterday from the firmware from a few months ago to the latest build and I was getting non stop texts from him last night about how blown away he was with the improved performance, literally surprised that any product could change that much from just a firmware update.

I've worked my butt off for the last few months trying to help Lumagen fine tune their DTM and other tweaks to the Lumagen. So hearing something like that is awesome.

On that note, if anyone here is interested in having their Lumagen tuned reach out. I offer remote setup and fine tuning for customer's specific setup so they can get the most from their Lumagen, even if they can't get someone to come to their house and do a full system calibration. I've done this for clients all across the states and even in Europe, Australia and the Middle East all with fantastic results.

Wow - the new Lumagen DTM firmware really improves the picture. It's like it's brighter but the blacks look just as black - not sure how they did that. No clipping that I can see. I have more testing but so far it looks amazing.

What Dpad setting are you using?  I have found that I prefer a setting of 1 the most.  It really brightened the image from my previous setting of 3 without any noticeable clipping.

Not sure because Kris sent a new configuration file, and I just uploaded it to the Lumagen. No manual setting changes required.

I've already received some help (separate thread) on calibrating/setting up a JVC NX7 and Lumagen Radiance Pro from this group and I appreciate the help. Mike was also very gracious in responding to an emailed query. The reason I am writing is that although the NX7 - Radiance Pro combination works amazingly well for SDR, I am getting my rear end handed to me in trying to set up that combination for 4K UHD. In my experience folks like details about the set up before responding, so I have provided that below. But the general issue is that although I am getting incredibly good colors, every bright object in the image (lights, the sun, sunlight gleaming off helmets in The Martian, etc.) has a halo around it (the bright spots are flaring). Based on my limited understanding (I have read most of the postings on this forum and AVSForum discussing calibration and the Radiance Pro and the tips and suggestions put out by both Lumangen and Chromapure, but have to admit to being more overwhelmed than anything).

My fundamental questions are (a) what am I doing wrong and (b) how can I solve it? I apologize for the breadth of the questions, but don't really know how else to phrase them. I assume that this halo/flare issue has to do with settings for HIM/DTM (and not color calibration), but again none of my experimentation has really solved the problem.

SDR Settings (for reference)

NX7 - Picture Mode: Natural; Color Profile: BT.709; Color Temp: 6500K (gains/offset tweaked for 20% and 80% grey using a xRite iD3 and Chromapure); Gamma 2.2. Lamp Power: Low; Aperture: Auto 2 at -2 (set to Manual during calibration).
Radiance Pro - CMS0; Colorspace SDR709; HDR Flag: Off; 2020 <-> 601/709: Auto
Calibrated with Chromapure Autocal (729 point color/21 point Gamma).

Looks incredible. The aperture at -2 is a bit weird, but that is the only way I can get approximately 48 nits (using Chromapure Raw reading of 100% white).

HDR Settings (flaring/halo)

NX7 - Picture Mode: HDR10; Color Profile: BT.2020' Color Temp: HDR10 (again gains/offset tweaked for 20% and 80% grey using same sensor and Chromapure); Gamma: 2.4; Lamp Power: High; Aperture: Auto 2 at 0 (set to Manual during calibration).

Radiance Pro - CMS1; Colorspace: SDR2020; HDR Flag: On; 2020 <-> 601/709: Auto
(also calibrated with the same meter, Chromapure Autocal 729 point color/21 point Gamma). Turned off HIM during calibration. Calibrated with the source (Oppo 203) turned off.

HDR Intensity Mapping: On; Max Light: 400 (this is approximately X6.4 of the 62.2 nits reading I get with the NX7 at the settings above using Chromapure at 100% white); Gamma into 3D LUT: SDR.
Low Display Ratio: 40; High Luminance Desat: 4; DTM: Enabled; DTM Pad: 3; Adaptive: Yes

I am projecting onto a SeymourAV AT screen, which I believe has neutral gain.

I am happy to attach (a) Chromapure reports or screenshots of the halo/flaring if that helps. Thanks in advance on any suggestions/guidance that anyone can provide.

The Lumagen Radiance Pro video processor is maybe the best thing I've added to my 4K projector for HDR. Everything looks outstanding automatically. The latest news from Lumagen -

Dynamic Tone Mapping (DTM):

We continue to improve the Radiance Pro Dynamic Tone Mapping (DTM). A movie producer, who is one of the people responsible for post-production image quality at a major studio, evaluated the Radiance Pro DTM versus the other available, or soon to be available, DTM options. He compared Studio Masters to the DTM output of the Radiance Pro and the other products. He said that “the other DTM options are not even in the same league as the Radiance Pro DTM.” This was before the currently posted software release which further distanced the Radiance Pro from the competition. In addition, we have another release in the works which will have further DTM improvements. These upcoming improvements will enhance a few difficult corner cases, and will not affect the majority of scenes. So, the current public release (060120) already provides exceptional results.

There is a new Lumagen Radiance Pro firmware update -

http://www.lumagen.com/testindex.php?module=radiancepro_updates (http://www.lumagen.com/testindex.php?module=radiancepro_updates)

080120- Posted 081220  Fix for a slight flicker issue seen with dynamic tone mapping in some movie titles. Improved algorithm for DTM DeSat used to limit saturation peaking for dynamic tone mapping and added an 'Auto' setting for DeSat in the DTM menu which is the new default. Fixed issue with DTM not taking into account user set video delay. Fix for auto aspect not always detecting image bounds with 9ghz input cards. New 18Ghz input chip firmware has small improvements from update on 051820. Fix for an intermittent video/audio drop with a Direct TV source.  Added feature for Kaleidescape player to eliminate output mode changes when changing from  Kaleidescape menu to movie -- a short "how to" is below.  Please continue giving us your detailed feedback on issues via email at support@lumagen.com .

Update time ~5 minutes @230k from previous firmware. Systems with 18Ghz input cards will have ~1 minute bootup time on first power up after this update as internal input chip firmware updates---if after first power-on it comes up with green/pink colorization then turn Pro off and back on to power-up for a second time.

How to set up Kaleidescape Strato & Pro to eliminate unnecessary output mode changes
With many projectors changing the output mode (.ei 4k24 to 4k60) can be rather slow. The Kaleidescape player always uses 60hz for it's menu but when playing a movie it's preferable to have it set to play at 24Hz so going between menu and movies can leave the viewer sometimes waiting 30 seconds with a blank screen while the equipment syncs up to the new output mode. A very simple way to fix this is just to set the Pro to output 4k24 for all input modes but then the less common case of 60Hz videos from the Kaliedescape would look stuttery so a method to stay in 24Hz output for only the Kaleidescape menus and 24Hz movies is desirable. There is a way to detect the special case of Kaleidescapes' menu screen and with a new option in the Pro we can eliminate this slow resync time between menus and movies and keep 60Hz videos looking good. To do this, make a change in the Kaleidescape players advanced video setup menu and set the HDMI Content Type Metadata to 'Transmit content type metadata' (the Kaleidescape will now output a special graphics flag over HDMI when in it's menu). On the Pro menu under Input: Options: HDMI Setup: Type, set the Graphic Flag Use setting to 'Use'. Now when the Kaleidescape is in it's menu the Pro will detect and use the graphics flag and classify the input mode as 'Other' (instead of 4k60). So the last setting to make is in the Pro's Output Setup menu and for the input mode condition of 'Other' change the Pro's output mode, CMS's and Style selection to match what is setup when detecting a 24Hz input mode.  The Pro will now stay in the same 24Hz output mode when Kaleidescape changes between 60Hz menu and 24Hz movies but still allow the Pro to change to a 60Hz mode when 60Hz videos are played.

We have been working on the pipeline enhancements now that we have the DTM in such great shape. We should have a release in about a week with an improved up-sampling algorithm (e.g. 2k to 4k), and both a sharpener for scaling (e.g. 2k to 4k), and a sharpener for 4k content. The new scaling algorithm (without any sharpness turned on) increases the Radiance Pro scaling score on the Tektronix scaling analysis tester by about 10% and there is a noticeable increase in image detail.

I can post more at a later date, but everyone should realize that over-sharpening alters the director's intent. Making a distant object "sharp" is wrong since that is not how it would look if you were there in person. Distant objects should be out of focus consistent with their distance from the observer. The same can be said when objects in motion are sharpened. You are reducing the intentional and necessary motion blur.

When you over-sharpen an image you create the dreaded "soap opera effect." The common complaint I hear from professionals about sharpening is that it makes the images look "artificial" and "over processed."

When a movie mastered in 2k is converted to UHD or HDR, the director/producer/grader decide on how sharp the resulting 4k images should be. They have the tools to really sharpen the images if they thought it was the right thing to do. However, you do not see this. An example I will likely discuss in more detail later is Skyfall. It was mastered in 2k and then up-sampled for the UHD version. The Radiance Pro scaling of the 2k version of Skyfall, without any sharpening, to my eyes looks essentially identical to the 4k UHD version. This is exactly what a scaling algorithm should do.

I do think there is a place for a small amount of sharpening to correct for detail lost in compression. For example Skyfall would have some additional detail if it was instead mastered in 4k. In addition, I think people would be surprised at how much high frequency detail is thrown out once the content is converted to the frequency-domain during the compression process. Looking at the "truncation matrix" for Luma and Chroma I have always been surprised at how good the images still can look after the high frequencies are reduced, or even tossed away. Trying to recover the lost detail makes sense, and that is what we are trying to achieve with the Radiance Pro sharpening we are working on.

One professional described (over) sharpening as "putting 10 spoon fulls of sugar in your coffee." It makes the images sickly-sweet. For the Radiance Pro we are working to recover lost detail with our sharpening algorithm, without making the mistake of over-sharpening the images. Our goal has always been, and will remain, studio reference standard image quality.

under what menu will the new sharpening controls be located? Since Darbee is not considered to be a sharpening process, how would you expect your new sharpening algorithm to interact with Darbee? Would you advise disabling Darbee once the new firmware is released or are they potentially synergistic? Lastly, will the new firmware have any improvement in upscaling of 480 (DVD) content? Thanks!
The new enhancements will be in the enhancement menu. That is Input -> In Configs -> input_resolution -> input_resolution_memory -> Enhance -> Sharpness. So this will be a per-input, per-input-memory and per-input-resolution settings to you can optimize for every input resolution.

Darbee is a "contrast enhancer" and the new Pro enhancements are "edge enhancements." In the older Radiance models, and now confirmed in the Radiance Pro, used with a light touch the Darbee and edge enhancements are synergistic IMO. I personally prefer the edge enhancements, and I think if you turn the new edge enhancements up a bit more you might choose to turn off Darbee. However, used in moderation they can be on at the same time since they affect the image in different ways.

I think this is one of those times that I have to send everyone off to experiment and report back once we release the edge enhancements. I think different people may well have different opinions. For example, I am doing testing with Darbee Off and I really like the results of using only the edge enhancements. However, for comparisons, I have my four memories set to:

MEMA: No enhancement
MEMB: New edge-enhancement only
MEMC: Darbee only
MEMD: Both

Note that if you want to do this once this is released you must select a different "input_resolution_memory" (0 to 7 available) for each input memory using the "Input Setup" menu. Don't forget to Save.

====

I have not spent much time on 480 or 576 content, but the edge enhancements do apply. However, a lot of SD content is low on detail, and high on noise. The edge enhancements work on detail. Since detail is lacking for SD content, little to work with. With a lot of SD content there is quite a lot of compression artifacts and image noise. The edge enhancements are happy to enhance artifacts and noise, which of course is not a good thing. I did look at a scene from "House of Flying Daggers" and the edge enhancement did improve the print on a cloth to some degree.

We are increasing precision of sections of logic being "touched" as they are worked on. For now this is the edge enhancement which touches some parts of the scaler. However, not all of the scaler is being worked on for the enhancement efforts. Over the next few months we will be updating more of the "10-bit section" of the pipeline to be 12 plus bits.

Updated mine tonight and set sharpening to 3. Looks good so far. Really happy with the Lumagen. It just keeps getting better and better.

Obviously I need to watch a lot more content, but so far it looks really good.

For 1080P upscaled to 4K I have sharpening on 3.

For 4K UHD I also have sharpening on 3.

Sensitivity – High.

Darbee seemed to be set at a default of 40, even though I could have sworn it was off ( does it re-set during firmware updates ? ), so I tried 20, then 15, then flipped it on and off using the Blu-ray " Cloud Atlas " as a test disc. Personally, I find the picture a tad cleaner looking with sharpness at 3 and Darbee off, so that's what I'm rolling with.

I watched " Hunter Killer " on 4K Blu - ray last night after setting up the new Lumagen settings, and the picture looked fantastic ( great soundtrack too - killer LFE ). Detail and the crisp look of that movie was incredible. I have friends coming Wed. to watch " The Gentlemen " on 4K Blu - ray. This will be the 4th or 5th time I've watched it in as many weeks, so I'm interested to see how much better it can look, since I thought it looked outstanding already !
Very pleased with this improvement !

A week or two ago I put on the Blu-ray " Kung Fu Hustle " to just watch a little bit, seeing as I hadn't watched it in quite some time. I was going to watch it with some friends. Being an older Blu-ray, it didn't look as good as I remembered - probably due to all of the squeaky clean 4K I've been watching lately. I put it on last night just to see if the new firmware had made any difference. It really has - that movie looks better and sharper / cleaner now, but it's not due to the sharpening feature ( I toggled that on and off to see ). The improvements to scaling have made a difference with older Blu-rays - at least the one I checked so far. There are some substantial upscaling improvements going on in the background - and I'd expect the further pipeline improvements to make things even better. Seeing as I have over 400 Blu-rays, many of which may never see a 4K upgrade, this is excellent !

I currently zoom in a 1.85 picture for 2.4 material and have the black bars spill over the top and bottom ( I have a 2.4 CIH screen) using the jvc rs600 and then use lense memory to shrink the image for 1.85 content with black bars on the sides

I want to use the 2.4 NLS for 1.85 content to fillmy screen

which lense memory do I use or do i still have to switch between the lense memory AND use NLS

thanks

No, I mean something newer than this one. And the change in the new version is even more significant than this 110120 version, I would say I saw a substantial change in DTM in the upcoming firmware.

Concerning the next update with even more improvement for the already spectacular DTM:

We are close to the next big release.

This release improves the "back and forth" scenes cuts which were difficult. Pat said the second time the same scene shows in a number of the cases actually does have different levels. The DTM was over emphasizing the difference, but Pat has found ways to adjust the DTM algorithm to keep the back and forth scenes as close as possible.

There were also a few scenes that had other issues. One type of scene I know about had enough areas with bright objects to fool our zone-based analysis. Pat redesigned the zone analysis, which improved these scenes.

I just discussed timeframe for the next release with Patrick. He said he is working on a couple additional scenes and thinks we can post the next release this weekend.

======

Usage comment for the upcoming release:

As we have seen in the past changing the algorithms can also change the recommended defaults. Let me first say that the current recommendations (Max Light = 4 to 6 times measured light in nits, Dyn Pad = 2, Low-ratio = 31) still work well. That said, I am planning to change my settings slightly based on viewing the results of DTM for this upcoming release.

Max Light: I have been at 5x (400 for a measured max of 78 nits) for our Lumagen Demo Theater RS4500. With the new release I prefer setting Max Light 6x measured max. This helped with some bright details (e.g. Mad Max: Fury Road sand storm scene explosions).

Dyn Pad: We changed to a recommendation of 2 (from 5 to 6) a while back. This was due to changes in the algorithm allowing the scene headroom to be reduced. The effect of Dyn Pad changes slightly in the upcoming release. In my viewing, IMO the Dyn Pad of 2 seems to reduce the headroom slightly from the previous release. Patrick said there were not intentional changes to the Dyn Pad headroom, but he said he did change the MaxCLL effect on calculations He said this could affect Dyn Pad. Dyn Pad of 2 still looks great for most scenes but one scene I found where I wanted a higher Dyn Pad was "The Meg" in the "Hatch scene" with the red haze in the hatch (this is in teh first couple minutes of the movie). For this scene I ended up preferring Dyn Pad = 5. I also found I preferred Dyn Pad = 5 for Mad Max, and for several other title. The difference in scene brightness between 2 nd 5 seems less to me, and I saw more bright detail changing Dyn Pad to 5.

I should note that I already have discussed this with Pro owners using the current release and suggested Dyn Pad = 5 in some cases. So this is not entirely new. Dyn Pad remains a trade-off between higher scene brightness (=2) and more detail in very bright objects (=5). This has not changed, but my preference has. I am currently thinking I will set Dyn Pad = 5 for the upcoming release. So, my recommendation is try 2, 3, 4, and 5 for Dyn Pad over a lot of material and then select your preference.

I am not changing Low Ratio or DeSat settings for this new release.

I hope this is helpful to everyone and that I have not opened a can of worms as my posts sometimes do.

I had quite a bit of trouble getting the Lumagen firmware to load onto the Radiance Pro today. Nothing I did worked - including boot mode. I always used the " com 3 " USB port. A little digging into the device manager on my computer finally showed that at some point since the last time I updated firmware, the USB ports were re-named. Probably a Microsoft update. The same port is now " com 5 ". If anyone is having trouble updating the firmware, it's possible this is why. Just FYI.

Apparently the numbers associated with USB ports aren't fixed, since you can have virtual ports. My laptop only has 2 USB ports. Why they aren't always " 1 and 2 " is one of those mysteries. I do have 5 ports of various types, but the com numbers go from 1 to 16 !

The Beta 2 (060322) release for the pipeline enhancements has been posted. It adds "Letter Box Top" for bottom up masking screens and those who just want all content to be at the top of their 16:9 to 2.2 screens. It also fixes some issues with Letter Box bottom and clears up the menu for setting these modes.

There is a "Remote Type." Due to typo in the data sent to the remote control company the new Radiance Pro Remote "Input" button code is really the old code for "PiP Off." Since this actually brings down the menu (the only thing done by the Input button), as well as turning PiP off on this non-PiP remote, and to prevent a three month or so delay in the already delayed Radiance Pro remote we choose to continue and build the Radiance Pro remote. No issues doing this for most people, but one person was using the "Input shortcut menu" and the Radiance Pro remote would not bring up this menu when pressing Input on the Radiance pro remote. The new Remote Type can be set to allow the Radiance Pro remote to bring up the "Input shortcut menu" when the Input button is pressed.

Based on feedback the Subtitle Feature "down-arrow" now moves the bottom edge of the active video up by 6%, and then 10% (rather than Beta 1's 8% and 12%). Note that for some aspects (e.g. 2.00 on a 16:9), the first down arrow move only enough to make the raster below the active image visible down to the bottom of the source raster, and this is less than 6%.

The FPGA timing looks very good, but please let us know if you have any issues with Beta 2.

Here is the release log:

Beta 060322- Posted 061422 Beta 2 of the Pipeline Enhancement update. Adds "Top" option to orient letterboxed video formats to the top of video output. This setting is in the menu under Input: In Configs: RES: Sizing: Lbox Control and previously options for Bottom, Zoom, Off . Fix for Lbox Control: Off when output aspect is > 1.78. Subtitle shift feature now shifts by 6 & 10% (was 8 & 12%). Fix for some cases of masking that could cause black screens or black & white video. Fix for hdcp delay use that could cause video loss or diamond hatch pattern to appear on output. Bugfix for using NLS with 4k sources when using 9Ghz input cards. A precision improvement for 4k sources when using 9Ghz input cards Bugfix for incorrect video mode id with 4096 pixel wide 4k output modes sent on HDMI output which could confuse some devices downstream of the Pro. Added a remote control type setting in menu under Other: I/O Setup: Remote Ctl, for some different Lumagen remotes if you're using the Input button on the Lumagen remote. Cleared up some confusing language in the Global: Video: Features menu. Fix for incorrect zooming with Lbox Control set to bottom. Other minor bugfixes and improvements.

Sounds like they are close to releasing a firmware to make instant aspect ratio switching a thing (using NLS) this is awesome for changing aspect ratio movies! And scope screens

Not really. I'd never use NLS - that's an abomination. 2nd, why would you want a small 16:9 image on your scope screen every time it's supposed to be an IMAX scene? I just lock the aspect ratio at 2.35:1. Switching to a smaller image would be distracting. I'm not going to do anything different with this new firmware.

I'm not a huge fan of NLS either, but do understand that it can be helpful in some situations, used judiciously. And some people aren't that sensitive to the distortion such that it bothers them less than others, and feel the added immersion compensates for it. No right or wrong here, just personal preference. I used it to watch Justice League, going from 1.33:1 to 2.00:1 and it looked pretty good. Watching 1.33:1 on a 2.35:1 screen just seemed ridiculous to me, but at 2.00:1 it was reasonable.

On dealing with variable aspect ratio movies, once again there is no right or wrong, and it's difficult (if not impossible, as in my particular room) to fully honor director intent. I would need a 1.9:1 screen, with the same width as my scope screen, masked all the time top and bottom except when watching the occasional variable ar movies, and this is simply not possible.

So I don't disagree with you that IMAX scenes were meant to be larger (same width as the 2.35:1 screen, but now taller), and using a processor to display it at 16:9 doesn't honor that intent. But at the same time, watching it at 2.35:1 is also inconsistent with director intent, since much of the additional content is cropped and not seen. Many movies may be "safe" to do this, and I understand this is often how it was shown in commercial theaters. But technically, it's still not what the director's intent was in having these IMAX scenes to begin with, as I understand it anyway.

I typically do watch these with aspect ratio switching, and don't find it visually distracting. In fact it's very easy to not even notice when the switch is occurring. But if someone chooses differently, to watch them at 2.35:1, that's also a perfectly legitimate choice.

Again, no right or wrong in any of these, and personal preference features prominently. This hobby is ultimately about our enjoying an experience in our homes, and what works for one may not work for everyone.

Technically, is a movie has IMAX scenes and was intended to be to watched on an IMAX screen, if you want to honor the " directors intent ", you should watch it on a 16:9 screen ( not many of us have 1.89:1 screens ) -

" The digital cinema IMAX projection system, debuted in 2008, is designed for use with shorter 1.89:1 aspect ratio screens. The system uses two 2K projectors that can present either 2D or 3D content in DCI or IMAX Digital Format (IDF; which in itself is a superset of DCI) " .

I'm all for " directors intent " until they get stupid. Scope movies with 4 IMAX scenes are getting whacked down to 2.35:1 in my theater ( I'm looking at you Interstellar ). Movies like Dunkirk that are 50 / 50 get watched on my taller 16:9 screen.

I was some what skeptical about purchasing the Lumagen Pro at first ( 4 years ago).
Today I consider it one of the best A/V purchases I’ve ever made.
It makes 4K HDR look amazing and the company support is second to none besides all the other things it does ( video calibration, auto aspect and up scaling) to name a few and it keeps getting better with free firmware updates.

Lumagen news -

Audio Advice Live 2023:

Lumagen will be exhibiting at Audio Advice Live 2023 with Storm Audio, Barco, Seymour Screen Excellence, and Focal, on August 4th through 6th, at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel. If you are close, please consider coming by. I would be happy to give you a demo, and discuss the latest software enhancements for the Radiance Pro.

DTM Desaturation Update:

We have released Beta 061223 with the enhanced desaturation feature. There were only a couple scene that were less than perfection, and Patrick is working on changes to fix these, and similar scenes that used less than the  optimal portion of the intensity range. The next Beta with improvements for these “flyer” scenes should be available in one to two weeks.

The best is about to get better

With its color-preserving nature (with some exceptions for highlight desaturation toward white), optimal transfer-function, and with the newest desaturation algorithm in this test release, the best DTM now even better.”

My I ask a question out of complete ignorance?

Would a Lumagen Radiance Pro noticeably improve my system, my image?

I have a JVC 4100 projector. It is position about 14 feet from my 110 inch Stuart StudioTek130 screen.  Would there be a significant improvement adding this to the system?

If it is added, does every input, Cable, 4K Player, Apple TV get plug into this first and then to my processor, or can I just have it connected to the processor and the projector?

I see a big improvement both picture wise / HDR wise and with a scope screen, auto aspect ratio handling wise.  Frankly, I couldn't be without one at this point. I have my sources routed to the Lumagen, and video out of the Lumagen direct to the RS4100, audio direct to the Denon A1H I have. I love it.

I second this. It made my pj look like I bought a new one. And with auto aspect. It’s a no brainer. The lumagen will outlast any projector i have. So its price is over a very long time. And they keep improving it to boot. .

That's what I thought, but Mr. Deering said elsewhere " When I was testing 100223 I was always using DPAD of 1, but the new builds from that are definitely NOT built around a DPAD of 1 and the recommendation is DPAD of 3 or more. If one doesn't mind a touch of clipping now and then, DPAD 2 would probably be okay, but DPAD 1 will definitely have clipping more often. ".

So things have changed. And, I need to load the new firmware that came out again yesterday!

Ya - I thought it looked pretty bright watching Train From Busan on dpad 1. Maybe too bright.

I agreed with woofer on this. The clarity and brilliance of the image exceed my expectations. Love the change in color scheme for the menu too...a refreshing look. For the first time, Dpad 1 is now very usable in this latest beta, to the point where clipping is minimal and yet still retains the image brilliance throughout. This is indeed "more than better" over 103123 and 111723. I can already see many happy faces. (https://i.imgur.com/Y30bJ2t.gif)

Beta 030424 - Posted 031724  Fix for autoaspect not triggering in some situations. Fix for some aspect ratios not being positioned correctly in letterbox bottom mode. Many more HDR dynamic tone mapping improvements. Added ZY811 rs232 command to pop up input and aspect on screen. Other small bug fixes.

I changed the "Low range" Transition (Tran) to 9, and I have my ratio for Max Light just over 6x (for our 80 nit Lumgen Demo Theater) at 500.

I am now liking Dyn Pad = 1. I watched my regression test and it looks great.

I don’t think it major. Just small bug fixes. I haven’t watched a movie in quite some time. Nothing new has come out and baseball season is upon us.

I think my Zappiti does pass DV, but I'm not sure how that will effect the calibration and current HDR tone mapping - if at all. I guess there is only one way to find out.

Kris Deering says ( from another forum ) -

The 080324 build is an outstanding build even if you are NOT going to use LLDV (which has to be turned on in the menu, otherwise it changes nothing) as it is a fantastic FPGA build. I would recommend it to ALL users even if they have no interest in LLDV.

Good enough for me!

For the first time ever it took my 4 tries to get the firmware to load into my Radiance Pro. Finally worked at a slower download speed. Thought I had a problem there for a while - since I have folks coming to watch Zombieland tonight!

That is exciting!

I've been toying with the idea of adding a Lumagen to my system, hoping that there is a flood of well-cared for 4200 series models hitting the used market or some nice B stock units once the ArtisaN comes out.

I’m just hoping they continue to update the 4200 as they have. It makes the price of entry less daunting knowing it won’t be obsolete for a long time.

We are excited to announce that we have Alpha release prototypes for the new external IP interface for the Radiance Pro series of video processors. These are working well, and we plan a few refinements. The LAN2RS232 will connect to the RS232 port on the Radiance Pro and provide direct control to, and status from, the Radiance Pro series of video processors. This interface will be internal in all ArtisaN units.

The LAN2RS232 acts as a webpage server and can directly connect to with a PC or tablet device using an IP address. If you have local or remote access to a site intranet, you can connect to the LAN2RS232 directly. In addition, it already works with the River Controls' Crestron driver, and we are working to get it added to the Control4 driver on drivercentral.io.

I have attached a picture of the LAN2RS232 web server user interface. The LAN2RS232 uses a wired POE LAN interface for power.

Initially you will be able to control the Radiance Pro and see video status. We plan to add a second setup page, and then later add the ability to upload Radiance Pro firmware.

The LAN2RS232 module will be priced in the USA at $495 USD retail.

We are taking Beta release orders and expect to ship within two weeks at the Beta level. If you are interested in helping us with Beta testing, please contact me by email at sales@lumagen.com (sales@lumagen.com). Once we have feedback we expect to take production orders.
