More lens shift than a similar Optoma or BenQ.

Wow.  I'd love to see one of these in person.  I'm sure JVC will do a good job implementing most of the features.

Also has good calibration adjustments for gains and offsets, so you should have no problem getting a good calibration on the unit.

Looks like it is using the newer 1080p DMD that is flashed four times for "4K".

That's unexpected, what, are they trying to get in on the <$2k bandwagon?

I just don’t understand this move at all.

JVC already has a 1080p eShift chip that has 40x the native resolution of that TI chip.

This is the last thing I want to see JVC spending R&D on. I want to see them focus on brighter and brighter / higher contrast units.

I want to see them make a 5000+ lumen unit to compete with the Sony 5000ES yet with even higher native contrast. Better and better HDR needs to be JVC’s focus. Which requires moving closer to Rec2020, much more light output, and much higher contrast on these true 4K chips.

I would think they could drop a 2-3 year old eShift chip into a super cheap chassis, if they really wanted to break into the $1000-2000 market.

Heck, B-stock 400s were being sold for like $1500. I bet that unit will far out preform anything this new DLP unit could offer.

Maybe they are working on that too. Who knows !

A a huge $1,000 plus loss for the dealer.

My guess is there is barely or no real R&D involved given how many manufacturers are jumping on these selling at such a low cost.  Probably takes just a little time with software configuration and expanding some abilities like lens shift that JVC is doing, etc. which probably doesn't take a ton of effort.

If you take a look at the sub $3K threads at the other site, A LOT of Joe Six pack types think these XPR projectors are the second coming and  they are being bought like crazy.

"I can finally get a 4K projector under $3000! OMG my dream has come true!"

What JVC has most likely done (custom software) is actually what I think makes or breaks a DLP projector. For the most part, all DLP projectors perform extremely similar. That's mostly because they're all based on similar or the same optical path and video processing. I don't think most people realize that pretty much all the XPR DLP units out there right now are based on only 3 different OEM projectors that share the same optical path and video processing.

So this means that software is really all that differentiates them from one another that use the same OEM design. If JVC can incorporate useable software that allows for precise color/greyscale calibration, accurate video processing, proper HDR EOTF curves and adjustment and an excellent dynamic contrast implementation it would dramatically separate overall performance from the rest of the pack even though its using the same OEM design. This is what Runco and Sim2 did back in the 1080p days. Now were stuck with relative garbage from Optoma and a few others who are aiming for budget performance.

I would love to see if JVC is able to take this OEM design and get the most from it, because there doesn't seem to be anyone else trying to do that at the moment.

Eventually the regular JVC line will move to native 4K and laser. With that move, I suspect we are looking at a price increase. Maybe JVC is looking for a product that they can have at the low end of their line, rather than just conceding those sales to other companies.

Traditionally DLP has usually been the value technology in the sub $3000 market, though epson has been creeping lower and lower in price and performance. If JVC has fine tuned the software aspect of this projector (dynamic contrast. calibration suite and HDR EOTF out of the box) I think this unit could be a real winner.

So I got to see this projector in person a week or so ago. WAY more lens shift than the Optoma's have. Three HDR profiles. Bright, 10,000 hour lamp life. It's a nice little projector.

Compared to the Optoma UHD60, which when fed a 4K single pixel test pattern showed something that looked like plaid, the projector actually showed a clean pixel grid.

This should be expected too, as this 1080p DMD is being flashed four times. From an objective standpoint, DLP DMDs are fast enough to do this without much issue. If the chroma processing is good enough where each flash of the DMD combined produces the correct color and luminance we should have a very capable native 4K image from this DMD with few caveats.

I wonder if this technology can be carried over to the .65" and .95" 1080p DMDs?

Those JVC DLP projectors have a good black level?

They are DLP projectors, with typical DLP contrast. So no, JVC didn't pull a miracle off contrast wise. But, they are bright, sharp and have excellent lens shift capability compared to other brands of DLP projectors in this price range.

Minor, but some. But I see some rainbows on the $ 80,000.00 Barco single chip projector too.

Seegs really needs to do a review of this pj and post it on the forum. Since no one else has done a comprehensive review on the JVC, it would really drive traffic to this site. Look at that crappy TVSpro. I had never heard of them until they decided to review a faux k DLP. Now every person in the AVS under $3k forum uses them as reference.

I've not been to avs for a while now, but i'm not surprised by what you say. You get the impression they want what they have to be the best and will post any BS to try and prove that. Forums are becoming more like social media where truth and honesty are no longer important, and 'fake news' and agendas are more the norm. Even if a decent review is posted, you can be sure it will be ignored or disputed, especially by those who don't understand what they are reading, and there seem to be increasingly more of those everywhere.

What I have always wondered about was the weight difference in projectors.
This projector weighs in at 10+lbs while a higher priced Sony or JVC weigh over 30.
What makes all the weight?

I'll guess 3 chip designs have a need for more real estate inside for the 3 chip design. The single chip designs are a lot simpler.

I would think better quality motorized lenses would add to the weight!

There was some talk about me possibly doing a review for this projector. But I have no control over such things. If I do get the chance I will gladly take it. I'd love to see what JVC can do with a DLP projector. But at this asking price I'm not expecting miracles or it even competing directly with JVCs own DiLA projectors. I don't think that's what this projector is meant for. It's meant to be offered as competition to the UHD65's of the projector world.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that this isn't going to measure up to DILAs.

I think if you did review it then it would dispel a lot of myths that have taken hold lately about these pjs. It would be nice to have a review with actual data (shocking right PJC and TVSpro), so people could get a better feel for the performance.

For AVScience, it would drive traffic to the site. There aren't any reviews of this pj yet and I would be curious how many will review it. As I said months ago, unique content drives traffic and a review of this pj would be it.

The only thing I'll say about this is that the type of people who are spreading these myth-like rumors of performance aren't going to be swayed into thinking differently. I think that is pretty clear. Though I suppose a review would be handy to link to to stop others from accidentally thinking something that isn't true. I still have a JVC eshift here I can write a little comparison up about.  But now that I think about it, I don't think such a comparison is needed. In reality JVC isn't looking for these projectors to compete with their own DiLA units, otherwise they would've priced this unit higher if they thought it was in the same league. No, this is meant to offer competitive performance to the other offerings around it's MSRP, especially the DLP competition. ie the UHD65.
