Title: DLP "4K" chips and 3D

Art's review of the Optoma UHZ65 is up at Projector Reviews and it reminded me of something I've been wondering for a while now. As far as I can see, none of the projectors using TIs 2716 x 1528 XPR chip support 3D. Searching around I found a statement on the old forum from a 3D enthusiast who talked to a projector manufacturer that the TI XPR chipset doesn't support 3D, which makes sense given that even the higher priced offerings don't have it. Seems like more of a market based decision by TI to get an inexpensive 4K solution out quickly, maybe.

But now I see that the recently announced Benq HT2550 which uses the new .47" TI chip, I think the DLP470TE, says it supports 3D. I can't find a real spec for the chip at the moment - the press release type stuff I see does make the same claim about displaying 8.3M pixels on the screen as the XPR chip claims, but I'm not sure it's the same resolution.

However the HT2550 specs have an odd statement:

Input resolution: supports up to 1920x1080.
Output resolution: supports up to 1280x720.

I know the HT2550 isn't relevant itself in this forum but it's the next step in TI's evolving 4K rollout so it's interesting to see, and especially that 3D is supported. Hopefully that means 3D isn't on the way to being killed off in the projection space.

It's interesting to hear about this projector. Looking on TI's website they claim the only two .47" DMD's they sell are both 1080p native:

I'm a bit skeptical that the BenQ HT2550 is actually a "native" 4K DMD. That is crazy high pixel density. I'm going to see if more information about this DMD or projector emerges. As for 3D, I can only surmise that 3D was left out due to a large focus on UHD compatibility. I think I remember reading that it can be done with the .67" XPR DMD, but a separate video processing solution is needed. In fact, I think a DPI model using the .67" XPR DMD actually offers 3D this way.
