Post by: AVSCraig on September 27, 2017, 05:44:11 PM
The Optoma UHD60 projector I won at Cedia just arrived ! I'll test it and post some screen shots / impressions / results this week or next. In the mean time, here it is -

With limited lens shift, I'm going to need to be clever setting this up temporarily. Stay tuned !

So first the bad news - 4K test patterns don't look too good -

HDMI sync times with 4K are long - just as long as the JVC's. And, I could not for the life of me get my UB900 to recognize the UHD60 as HDR capable - it sent 4K / SDR rec 709 no matter what I did.

Black levels are not too good. That said, if your screen is totally masked, the picture overall is surprisingly good -

Screen size - Lucy - 2.35:1  - 107.6" diagonal ( 99" x 42.1 " ). Rocky Mountain Express - 1.78:1 - 113.6" diagonal ( 99" x 55.6 " ) - Stewart Cima neve screen ( 1.1+ gain ). Due to the temporary nature of the setup, this was the largest I could go on my 122" diagonal 16:9 screen in my room.

Contrast and brightness adjusted, then pretty much used out of the box settings - reference, 2.4 gamma, dynamic black on.

Measurements using a 100 IRE test pattern -

HDR mode - 1183 lumens.

High Lamp - reference setting ( all the follow measurements are with reference setting ) - 924 lumens.

Eco lamp - 586 lumens.

Dynamic Black on - 1008 lumens.

I'm sure one could dial in a better picture with a full calibration. Mine was just a quick out of the box test. And, I'd guess the UHD65 is even better.

Things I don't like - lots of light coming out of the vent in front -

Sync times at least with 4K is as long as with a JVC - just FYI.

Limited lens shift and zoom.

I see occasional rainbow effect. Not much though.

Black levels are not so good.

Things I do like -

DLP motion sure does look good.

The picture is sharp and crisp, despite the 4K test pattern fail.

Thanks for your review, Craig.

In some ways it makes me miss my Lumis. DLP does have a wonderful look, even with these XPR chips. If someone had a room where higher contrast wouldn't make any difference, this projector did throw a nice image. I'm sure it would look even better with a full calibration.

Craig, you really won the Optoma at Cedia ?

Will you pick my next lottery numbers for me?

I did - and the last thing I won before this was the AVS Home Theater Cruise back in 2003 - thanks to NEC ( contest for buying an HT1000 projector ) !
