Id like to comment on a few benefits of the material. This is a multi layer material. The black sub layer has a positive side effect, it adds contrast. It has one the highest gain of all fabric materials and the audio performance is a notch better then its competition. The material is very smooth, it is 6k ready, the material is ready for new video formats the future may bring us. The smoothness of the material does not amplify video noise. It is the ideal material for RGB laser where speckle is a concern.
The best part of all of this, the material is available as "just the material" to satisfy the the ever growing DIY market.
We should start a thread to allow customers to post pictures of their DIY screens.

Hi Everyone. I've been doing a lot of research on AT screens. I've come across many positive reviews of the new V6 material. I'm new to home theater and looking to purchase my first AT screen. I'm quite interested in using V6. However, I don't currently own a screen that I could retrofit with different material and I'm not much of a DIY person who is capable or interested in building a screen from scratch. I am more interested in purchasing a pre-fabricated screen that is designed to accommodate the V6 fabric. It looks like this type of screen frame is available from DreamScreen in Norway but I don't think it is currently available in the US.
Does AV Science have any plans to start selling screen frames that are compatible with the V6 fabric? If not, does anyone know where I could purchase a good quality 2.35 or 2.37 pre-fabricated screen frame that could be used with the V6 fabric?

AVS would have to get back to you in terms of frame availability, but as soon as we´re able to supply them with ample amounts of fabric I am sure they will consider carrying frames as well. Currently, supply of fabric is limited, but we´re working on resolving this as of right now. We will also be releasing a motorised masking frame within Q3 2017, more info on that later on.
Also, anyone located in Europe, the UltraWeave V6 will be showcased at the ISE show in Amsterdam 7.-10. of February in the Alcons Audio & Barco booth. The booth is a bit smaller than the CEDIA one, featuring a 11 feet 5 inch wide cinescope screen. Barco will be supplying either their new "LOKI" or a similar 4K @ 8-10K lumens projector and Alcons will be using a Trinnov preamp with full Auro-3D as well as Atmos setup to showcase true immersive audio in both Dolby and Auro-formats.

I will definitely see an improvement. I have already compared a large sample of V5 and a sample of V6 to my EN4K. The V5 and V6 are brighter and have less shimmer.

Here's a way, way belated thanks to you and Chris Seymour for samples of the V6, 4k, and EN-B. I clipped them side by side onto a piece of foamcore board with a piece of black construction paper immediately beneath. This I hung over my W/B spandex screen.
I snapped phone photos of a grid, football, TV, and movies, but decided not to post anything because I'm not sure what the pix show except differences in brightness. I always wonder what is being demonstrated with all posted screen pix...the screen, the PJ, the room, the camera, the angle, the photographer, etc...
I could not discern a significant sharpness difference between the spandex and any of the samples when projecting the grid. But this could be the result of many factors other than the screen material (brightness diff, focus, small sample size, operator error, etc.). I expected to see this difference, too, due to (1) Mike's statement, among others, that spandex's chief failing is the lighting up of adjacent fibers resulting in a loss of sharpness, and (2) my personal experience of viewing another AVSers RS400 lighting up a solid (SI) screen..which was noticeably sharper than my spandex screen.
I have never been completely happy with my mixed use room...too much light reflection from ceiling and walls, and understand that may be the chief limitation of my screen. To that end, I am finally considering converting a room to dedicated HT use (YEA!), but have been hesitant to create this bat cave because it is on the small side. If/when that happens I'll reevaluate the spandex and generally revisit the screen question.

Sharpness is really quite a bit hard to both depict and also to explain, but certainly a component we have placed a lot of emphasis optimising on the V6. We used a single layered custom knitted, but still basically a "spandex" on our 3. generation fabric too, but the main issue was / is the softness applied to the image and what we sought out to improve on our forthcoming generations. In order to address the sharpness, the V4 used a very high density, high gain, but also far less acoustically transparent weaved surface, but for our fifth gen. fabric we combined the weaved and knitted fabrics and as such utilised the advantages of both production methods in one single (patented) layout - resulting in both (relatively) high gain and last but not least a very good acoustical transparency. The V6 further improved on the layout of the V5, increasing overall sharpness without taking a toll on AT.
I´d say the sharpness component within our V6 design construction consists of two major elements; the front ultrafine, randomly woven (which also means totally moiré resistant even at very high resolutions) layer that makes out a "simulated coating", and the integrated black backing that makes certain no distance between the backing and reflective layers introduce blooming and thus reduced sharpness performance in darker / contrasted parts of the image reflection. Since we are indeed using a multiple reflective layered surface, the sharpness is actually not very easy to review from a small sample, normally you´d need at least 1x1m sample to properly review. Also, one should be seated at least 1m away from the sample so that the entire matrix of reflected light is properly absorbed. If you are seated too close, you will see through the primary layer and thus sharpness will be perceived as lower.
We´ll try to take some pics of the sharpness reflection of the V6, but meanwhile please review these pics that compares the V6 to a (custom) spandex fabric. Might be a bit hard to tell the difference, but it´s there, and when blown up full size in 4K++ it is certainly also - in my opinion at least - an important feature.

Several components of the V6 design seem ingenious: the combination of woven and knitted fabrics, for instance. Are these two distinct layers? Or, have you managed to combine these two processes? Whatever the technique, the V6's surface seems ultra smooth. And integrating the black backing seems intuitively better than two completely separate, even if adjacent, layers - as in spandex white over black.
Since you agree that "sharpness is actually not very easy to review from a small sample," I'm sure you know that I wasn't saying that the V6 isn't sharper than my spandex. In fact, my speculation is that if I saw a full size W/B milliskin spandex screen side by side with a V6 screen, the difference would likely be immediately clear. V6 is certainly high on my list of possible upgrades.

Thanks, it´s a pleasure to be able to share these details, I´m a true enthusiast myself and certainly always been a fan of DIY! :) Spandex is really an affordable solution with several very nice technical qualities, no doubt about that, that´s also why we used "spandex" (though custom designed in terms of color and structural apperance) for our third gen fabrics. We still use spandex / knit, we have just found an even better (in our opinion at least... ;)) way of exploiting its qualities (gain + AT). There has been some discussions on AVS too in regards to the sharpness of V6 vs. various knitted / spandex fabrics and therefore it made sense to try to kill two birds with one stone replying right here, and I totally understand that it´s hard for you to evaluate sharpness based on a small sample! I´ll try to get some more detailed pics taken too.
The fabric is made out of three separately, custom designed layers. Front layer is woven in a randomly laid out pattern to replicate a regular (PVC) coating and as such avoid any possibility of moiré / pixel interference, while the mid layer, also white, reflects in combination with the weave, but has the advantage of better acoustical transparency while still providing substantial added gain being a knitted (spandex) type of fabric. Finally the black backing is also knitted to allow more air (i.e. sound waves) to pass unobstructed. I should also add that the layout of both knitted layers is custom designed too, one end being more open (facing audio, increasing AT) and the other end more closed (facing video, increasing gain). Each layer is custom produced to exact spec and since bonded. Bonding is required to maintain sharpness as the front weave and the second knit needs to be basically totally integrated as such, but bonding the black backing certainly also has its clear advantages in comparison to simply tensioning two separate layers (front + backing) as even the slightest distance between the reflecting and backing layer will result in blooming, especially visible on contrasted objects, as well as overall reduced sharpness.
This process has certainly not been without its challenges, I can admit as much, but our second V6 production run is ready within some weeks now and among other things we have improved packaging quite significantly this time to better accommodate worldwide handling and transporting and also increased size from a current maximum height of 79" to 118" to fit larger installations such as commercial screening applications.

@ellisr63; we have not benchmarked the V6 vs. the XD, but reports from others indicate that the XD has somewhat higher gain than the V6; about 0.85-0.9 while ours has about 0.8 (which is also our specified gain). Compared to the Screen Excellence Enlightor 4K that is listed at 0.9 gain by the manufacturer it is reported to have a slightly better gain, but not verified at our end. We have, however, benchmarked it vs. Screen Research 4K AT fabric, and the V6 has about the same gain as their 1.0 listed fabric. So; the V6 has a pretty decent gain, but is not a class leader in such regards.
Still, although we would have been able to increase the gain another 10% alternating the buildup of the layers somewhat, it would have been at a cost of AT which is really at reference levels on the V6. The advantage of the very fine front woven layer, which is also the main "barrier" in terms of acoustical transparency, is quite significant - we´re basically able to replicate the coating of a regular PVC fabric thus ensuring sharpness and the ability to be seated very close to the screen without being bothered by the weave. Also, moiré, even at very high resolutions, is effectively taken care of by using such a finely woven random structural buildup. Still, even though gain is quite on par with some of the very best alternatives out there, the AT is very good.
Finally, the integrated black backing of the V6 fabric ensures no loss of contrast as well as no light bleed between the reflecting and black blocking layer, which is very important in terms of contrast performance with highly contrasted objects in dark surroundings. Even the slightest distance between the backing layer and the reflective is very damaging to contrast performance in such regards, and what we found in our 4. generation of fabrics, tensioning two layers of fabric is very hard. Therefore, on the V6, the black backing is bonded as an integrated part of the fabric.
Also, compared to knitted fabrics, spandex for example, or variations as such supplied by other manufacturers, the front weaved layer, a method that is also patented, is what provides the added sharpness (and density) to the V6. We do use knit as well, but as the second layer, adding to the reflection rather than reflecting alone - thus providing added gain while still leaving the sharpness to be detailed by the front weave. Although one might consider such a layout reductive in terms of sharpness, we have carefully designed the setup to improve rather than reduce the sharpness.
I strongly recommend that a sample is tested in terms of reviewing the V6, and as such, as large a sample as possible as I´d recommend you be seated at least 1m from the screen fabric to properly be able to review the totality of the reflection as such, enabling the performance the combination of layers make out.
AVScience will soon be able to supply the new "PRO XXL" version of the V6 @ 3x8m / 118" x 295" for large installations as well. This fabric is also flame retardant which is a requirement for most commercial installations. We are also working on a new modular motorised masking frame, at first a 1-way 16:9->2.40 and a 2-way 2.40:1->16:9 top down masking system. Somfy motors and sturdy quality, but still rather "basic" buildup as we have found in the past that masking systems that uses too many components are too easily stuck etc. Hopefully the new masking system will be available within 2017, but the new "PRO XXL" version of the V6 will be available in the US quite shortly! Please remember that AVS is also able to supply universal grip rails that can be used to retrofit just about any existing frame with the V6 fabric too.

To further detail the buildup of the V6, please review the attached image. On the left side, the second layer is not included, only primary (ultra)weaved layer and the black backing. On the right side all three layers are included (please disregard the vertical holes @ second layer used at the ends to maintain tension while bonding). Using only the weaved front layer, the gain would have been too low. Still, density and structural performance is very good for the weave alone. Adding the second knitted layer, the gain is increased significantly, but at a very slight cost of AT since knitted fabrics are very efficient in such regards - but still maintaining the structural performance provided by the primary weaved layer (i.e. high density, random surface pattern and high sharpness). If the weave is not used, the knit is still quite finely structured, but without the random buildup of the weave sharpness suffers; it simply "softens" too much. The combination of these layers is what we have patented and makes out the core for the stellar performance found in the V6 both in regards to image -but not the least audio quality.
Again, reviewing a sample or better still; seeing (and hearing) it full size is recommended! :)

Attached is a (direct side-by-side) comparison pic of the UltraWeave V6 vs a regular coated PVC non-AT fabric. Combining such a (random) textural quality and the acoustical transparency (1,5dB on average) offered from the V6 is possible using the patented multiple layered system, allowing for a second layer to compensate for the loss of light introduced by increasing the density / resolution of the front weaved layer.

So, new PRO XXL production run is now in stock and we are very pleased with the quality of this production run! What new with this run is;
1. Now available up to 118" x 295" "XXL" size + 118" x 78" "cutout". Due to production limitations these are the only sizes available right now, but AVScience might be able to cut smaller portions off of the "XXL" 118" x 295" upon request.
2. Fire retardant to better suit commercial installations (screening & studio)
3. Improved packaging to make it more suited for world wide (re)shipping(s)
4. Still, exactly the same layout and specs as the current V6 - why change a winning formula?? :) Still superbly matte, i.e. no speckle, randomly laid out ultra fine weaved front layer replicating a regular PVC coating, D65 neutral within 2% of reference and acoustical transparency averaging at a mere 1,5dB loss.
We´re also working full speed on the new modular motorised masking system, first two prototype is being build right now - one in full steel at the frame factory, as well as one 3D printed at our offices. As soon as we have a working prototype ready I´ll post more info. Also, the masking roller being used, Somfy powered and quite "rugged", looks very good! Will be available in either 1-way 16:9->2.40:1 and also possible to close all the way down to protect the screen while not in use - as well as a 2-way 2.40:1->16:9 using two separate rollers / motors. Width up to 5m / 16 ft in 16:9 and 7m / 23ft in 2.40:1.

Mike, although the masking system is quite general, basically a standard Somfy roller system, we have made the frame custom designed to fit the masking roller. So, it would basically be the other way around; the frame would fit just about any "masking roller", but in general not the other way around... I will share new details shortly, but I do think we have indeed figured out a solution that is very cost efficient and stabile - but I guess proof is in the pudding yet... ;)

Image size is about 15 1/2 feet wide... More info coming soon!

So, a couple of pics further detailing the back of the frame. The roller moves up and down through custom tracks on each side.
Also, I have attached a couple of 3D outputs of the specific frame that will be displayed at CEDIA, it´s going to be MASSIVE - but since the feedback we got on last years CEDIA were just that; doing a 14 ft. 2.35:1 native screen at that time - folks wanted it even LARGER and also motorised masking that did not cost half a house. We listened! :) Please note that for the 2.40:1 native screen (2-way masking to 16:9) the max width can be as much as 23 ft. However, since we are doing the masking from the top down, not the sides, there will be no adjustment possibilty for this masking solution other than fixed 16:9 and 2.40:1. So, for most US installations where ceiling height is not the limitation I would presume the 16:9 native 1-way masking would be the most prominent alternative. This solution will also allow for full closing of the masking fabric to protect that fabric while not in use, a feature that is not available for the 2.40:1 native 2-way system. So, basically, the 2.40:1 native alternative is more of an alternative used if ceiling height limits the size too much, which is a very common issue in Europe.
Shipping is also a crucial factor in terms of cost on these large items and therefore both the frame as well as the masking roller is dividable allowing all frame- and masking sizes to be shippable by express / air.

So, for anyone interested we´ll be showcasing a prototype MotoMask V2 @ Alcons Audio Pro-Ribbon Immersive Experience at the Upper Level, 25C of the High Performance Audio rooms.
I´ve included a 3D sketch of the room, featuring Alcons a full CRMS system, Trinnov pre-amp feeding AES / EBU to Alcons amps / processors and Barco LOKI 4K DLP laser @ 8500 lumens projector. Screen size is 212" 16:9 native (15 1/2" image width), 1-way masked to 2.40:1.

...the green stuff there are 1D QRD panels custom supplied by us for this specific show. These are actually quite cool, moulded using a new very light form of polymer plastic, so that each panel of 1200x300x100mm (47" x 12" x 4") weight only 2,8kg / 6 pounds. Can be attached to walls using velcro due to light weight, but these panels are custom made to accommodate a special M6 attachment using 4 points at the back for ceiling mounting and 2 points at the top for hanging from the truss. Might become available later on if people fancy them; MSRP would be typically 149-199USD per panel.

The newest V6 AT screen fabric is excellent - great demo at Cedia. That was one big screen too !

I could not see any texture / sheen or other artifacts at all ! :)

Thanks Craig! We got a lot of positive feedback this year, and good amounts of both 78" x 118" as well as some 118" x 295" DIY / retrofit systems are now in stock @ AVScience, our exclusive US distributor and dealer.
What made the presentation even more impressive this year was the fact that the two stereo speakers (L+R) were placed outside the screen area as the sheer size of the room allowed for this. Having only the center channel placed behind the screen (+2x 21" suba) would often be quite revealing to any excessive acoustical blockage. This was not noticeable at all, confirming the very strong AT performance of the V6.
As for video we did a number of clips, but one is perhaps the most revealing of all when it comes to speckle, uneveness etc etc; intro of Art of Flight being bombarded by 9000 lumens from the Barco Loki dual laser. We passed - at least in my opinion - this critical test as well; agreed Craig??
Loki, however, is a bit limited in the contrast department, and for certain content the gamma used was not compensating sufficiently. Also, shooting Blu-ray content on such a huge screen (15 1/2 ft 16:9 native, motorised masked to cinescope) really also gave us some issues with banding, very visible mpeg artifacts at times... Still, on brighter scenes and when content called for it, sharpness was quite OK. Although the XPR DLP wobbling system reduces sharpness somewhat I could still make out the DLP mirror 'hinges'...

Absolutely. As far as I could tell, the screen was invisible. That's the first time I've seen a Barco Loki. I find I can now see some RBE on all single chip DLP projectors including this one. I must have watched 3 chip projectors for too long ! Overall the picture looked really good, especially considering the size of the screen. And the masking system worked quite well - it kind of caught me by surprise during and aspect ratio change ! :)

Ordered the screen fabric today. Once I get it, I will have to find a weekend where I can pull masking system and then screen for install. This coming weekend is out, since I will be out of town. Taking son to look at a school.

A few things arrived yesterday. One of which was my V6 fabric. The screen fabric is the prepackaged 2 meter by 3 meter material. Packaged very nicely. I wish I had time to install this weekend, but not going to happen. :(

Yes, real world gain on EN4K is about 0.75. V6 is 0.84, so I will gain about 12%.

For those that are retrofitting V6 onto an existing frame. If the frame is a low cost lightweight frame, you need to be careful, that you do not tension so tight that you make the frame hourglass shaped. Is is really only a problem if you have a large screen or a pretty good sized scope screen and a lightweight frame. What I would probably do. Get four pieces of 2x4 that are longer than your screen height. Lay them out so that you have two pieces that hit at 1/3rd points and the other two under the ends of the screen.
Measure the viewing height of the frame and how big the lip of the frame is. If the lip is 1/4", then get some 1/4" blocks of wood. Fasten these blocks onto the middle two 2x4's so that they are viewing height apart. Now lay the frame face down on the 2x4's. The blocks will now, not allow the frame to bow in, when tensioning the fabric. Now just install the fabric like normal.
If the frame was really large, you could do the above and once finished, before removing the frame from the struts, install a couple braces on the back side, so that the screen can't bow in. You would need to add a spacer on the wall to move the wall cleat out the same as the thickness of the brace on the back.
