Here is an interesting update on 4K UHD sales etc. ( dated Nov 10th ) -

the good news is they are dropping in price fast
-
The 4k FP are dirt cheap... I just wish the price of the 4K projectors would drop like the FPs have. :(
-
I cant believe how cheap the 4k TVs are...you are spot on

Too bad they are so small compared to front projection ! Here is an 80" diagonal 16:9 TV vs my 128" diagonal 2.35:1 screen.

I was hoping the format where you rolled the screen fabric (TV) on the wall would be popular by now, but apparently it died before production. It would be great to just roll the fabric on the wall, and plug it into your AVR. This would have the potential to eliminate projectors though if the image is great.

I will never give up a projector....even is 110" TV's become somewhat affordable...just something about a PJ

" I'm not going to venture any more speculation at this point, except to take a stab at the pricing of the 65-inch "wallpaper" set: $10,000. " - too spendy, too small.

I agree it is expensive, but if it looks as good as a FP, they bring the price down to $5k, and make it wall size...it might be great. Then you could view in a room with lights on if you wanted, and have a bright picture still. I really think this is the future, but it must come down in price to where it competes size, and price to FPs and Projectors.

Too bad they can't matrix four 55-inch 1080p OLED panels to make one big 110" 4K display. Surely that would be less expensive than a 110-inch 4K OLED panel.

But you would be able to see a line where the panels met. If viewed from far enough away, you might not see the line, but from most normal viewing distances, you would. That would be distracting to me.

New 4K UHD Blu Ray releases seem stuck at 156 titles -
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php?action=search&videoresolutionid=2683&sortby=releasetimestamp
Come on Sony - where is " The 5th Element " and " Leon - The Professional " in 4K ??
-
Sony should have plenty to release after they did their Mastered in 4k line on Blu-ray. All of these titles should have been day 1 for 4k UHD BD

It wasn't like I was going to buy the movies yet again on Blu ray, especially when I saw the " Mastered In 4k ". This is like the old " Where's the Beef " Wendy's commercial. Where's the 4K ?

I agree. Depending on the source, it's hard to know what improvement a 4K release will provide over simple upscaling. Since both The Fifth Element and Leon were just re-released with Atmos encoding, is there anything worth doing a 4K re-master?

They were re-mastered in 4K, for that " Remastered in 4K " Blu Ray release. I'm guessing they both will look better, on the actual 4K UHD. Where is that ? I'll buy it now, if it is available. Sony moves so slow, i guess I'll put it on my list for next years Black Friday sales. ???

The Fifth Element remastered in 4K is in my opinion a mess, enhancement that has addet edge ringing, and some scenes look so bad that the NTSC DVD would look better upscaled.. So it looks more like they are more focused on making something that looks different than better, hope they will not pass that on to the UHD edition.

True. Your current setup might look just as good upscaled through your AVR or Projector with out buying a replacement 4K disc, other than getting Atmos channels. Sad thing is some of the Manufacturers are resorting to putting the Atmos channels only on 4K discs. :(

Yes, and frankly, they win. That's one of the reasons I'm moving on to a 4K BR player. Though I admit that, with an aging BR player and a 4K tv, that has been the intent. But now it's NOW.
-
Come on studios - where are the new 4K Blu Rays ? The count of available or announced but not released yet has crept from 160 titles to a whopping 162 titles over the last 2 weeks ! >:(
-
I'm hoping for some good sales close to Christmas to pick up some current titles as I just started buying UHD BDs.
-
Finally - The 5th Element on 4K Blu Ray is coming !
" All right, let’s have more on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from CES 2017, plus a bit of regular Blu-ray announcement news too...
First up, we have reliable word that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is listing Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element for release on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format on 7/11. That makes a ton of sense, because Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) arrives in theatres on 7/21 (from STX Entertainment). "

That's great! But make sure it has Atmos.
I just bought the bluray with Atmos for all of $8 before the holiday. Absolutely blew me away! But I have yet to watch it on my OPPO. Guess what's high in the priority list?
Now we just need LOTR in UHD Atmos... (well, maybe not "just"...)
Man! that whole idea just sends shivers down my spine!

I'd be just as happy if it has DTS : X !

Arrival 4K Blu-ray
Posted 19 hours ago
Paramount Home Media Distribution has announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray acclaimed Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's latest film, Arrival (2016), starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mark O'Brien, and Tzi Ma. The two releases will be available for purchase on February 14.
YES !

Prometheus is now listed as coming on 4k UHD BR. Along with another favorite of mine - Ex Machina. I've currently got 8 movies in my Amazon wish list that are coming on 4K, 6 of them new ( or new to me ) !

Super excited for this one. Short of perhaps an Alien 4k announcement as well I couldn't be more thrilled.

And perhaps this signals that the new Alien : Covenant film will be released on 4K too - I'm looking forward to this movie !

Bridge on the River Kwai too !

" We’ve gotten more confirmation too from sources that Sony is preparing The Bridge on the River Kwai for 4K UHD release later this year, and that Paramount is preparing The Godfather films for 4K UHD, though we don’t have a timetable for that release. I’ve actually seen tests of both titles on the format and they’re impressive as hell. "

Let us know what you think. I have Leon in BR with Atmos, so I'm not much inclined to get the UHD unless it is pretty special.

You got the last " remastered in 4K " version, correct ? I decided to wait for this. I assume the same Blu-ray you got will be included with the 4K disc.
-
Best Buy has UHD disc pre-order up for both Fifth Element (SteelBook) and Leon. Both priced at $22.99 with free shipping.

AVSCraig,
...you've opened a remarkable can of classic possibilities...just think of the 3-strip technicolor films from the past that
would probably be mind blowing in 4K...of course, if especially Warner Bros. would do us the honor of investing and releasing the outstanding library of films at their beck and command...
...just a note...the discription of "The Wizard of Oz" that you've posted is weird to say the least...It makes the classic sound as if it is a film noir...

When they restored Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, Ben Hur and a probably a few others, they scanned them at 4K and down rezed it for the Blu ray release. It shouldn't be much trouble to release a 4K version. My wallet is ready.....
