Martin Logan Motion Series Speakers Owners Thread
« on: November 03, 2016, 01:49:03 PM »
I've had my Motion 40's / Motion FX surrounds and other Motion speakers for about 3 1/2 years now. Still a great sounding speaker. Anyone else using Martin Logan Motion speakers ?

It's pretty hard to photograph black speakers in a dark mostly black room !

What are you using for Atmos?  Ceiling or Atmos Enabled?  I don't have Martin Logans but B&W seems not interested in Atmos.

I am wondering how well the MartinLogan Motion AFX Dolby Atmos enabled speakers compare.

I loved my Sequels when I had them... I didn't know they were now making speakers other than electrostats. I bet they sound great.

I'm not right now. My speaker locations are better for DTS : X than Atmos. I really don't have a good ceiling for speakers. And my surrounds need to be mounted much higher than is recommended for Atmos. I'm perfectly happy with 11 channels the way they are now.

They do sound great. A friend brought over the Blu Ray " The Police - Certifiable " this weekend. That soundtrack sounded amazing on my Martin Logan Motion speakers !! I might have to pick up that disc for a demo disc.

I recently upgraded to the Motion series.

I am using the XT35s for my fronts (mounted beneath screen) and Motion 4s for my (3) rears.  I haven't had a lot of time using them as I am without a projector at the moment, but was impressed with what I did hear.  I upgraded from Def Tech SM55s and PM1000s.  The ribbon tweeter improves the dialogue and they had just an overall more natural sound.

Now that you have had more time to listen to them, any more thoughts?

I really like them. :)  I think the dialogue is the biggest improvement which is what I was aiming for with these given the ribbon tweeter.  The best way to explain it is a more natural, precise sound even with mids.  More delicacy.  I have a little hearing loss too and sometimes, mostly with newer movies, I find the dialogue too low and sound effects too high.  I also don't play above 85-90 db to protect my hearing so these newer high dynamic range movies make dialogue harder to hear for me but these speakers are certainly helping.  Even my girlfriend who has very good hearing notices the improvement.  Note, with older movies I don't find this an issue.

I'm also having Chad B out for the Audyssey Pro calibration where he also does the REW measuring, uses a high quality microphone, etc. all of which is a big improvement over the standard Audyssey auto cal with the supplied mic I'm doing until he comes out.  I've had him calibrate two different sound systems in the past this way and the improvement was really evident.  So I will report again once I get him out - I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks or so as he will be calibrating my RS500 too.

That's pretty much what I found - I love the ribbon tweeter, it does seem to sound better to me than dome tweeters. I have the same issue - some hearing loss, and dialog sounds better without having to turn up the volume ( which doesn't please my wife ).

I agree and I don't think I can go back to dome tweeters again.  I do here subtle sounds I didn't heard before which is kind of cool.

The metal grilles are pretty reflecting, but using the JoAnn Royalty 3 velvet it pretty much took care of everything.  I was going to use speaker grille cloth for the rest of it, but found it pretty much unnecessary.

So, just a follow-up since the audio calibration I had.

Not a knock on the Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 55s as they are good for the money, but these XT35s are in a different league.  The natural clarity is a full step above my SM55s.  The subtly of sounds I'm hearing now is something I didn't hear before.  Completely different speaker.  I'm very happy I upgraded.

Moving to dual Rythmik L12s up front replacing the Hsu 15" VTF I had in the back corner of my room made an equally if not more improved difference in that area.  I'm still getting the same deep extension according to Chad.

Between the speaker/sub and the RS500 upgrade, it's a new home theater experience for 2017!

That looks a lot like a picture of the front of my room. My picture is with three 65 watt flood lights on full, located right above the screen. Black pit of a room just absorbs light.

I know not everyone can do it, but it's an awesome way to experience FP.  I'm never going without a dedicated theater room.  ::)

I agree. New speakers and an RS500 - sounds like 2017 is going to be a good home theater year for you !
