I have just published the final review about the Acer V9800, the second DLP 4K home theater after the BenQ W11000 :

Nice review! :)

Contrast is still is a huge disappointment with these new 4k DLP machines. The DI really should have been better implemented in this one as it needs all the help it can get. Native contrast of around 960:1 in the calibrated modes is just not enough in my opinion. After being spoiled with contrast from LCOS/LCOQ projectors I can't see myself taking this many steps backwards with regards to the black levels in my HT.

It's not even a matter of being spoiled by LCoS, that's bad by DLP standards.  My 10 year old Planar 8150 has nearly 3x the native contrast and a very effective DI.

960:1 is business projector contrast !

Yeah, it's a shame that contrast performance seems to have taken steps backwards with this new chip. Texas Instruments really should do everything they can to try and figure out a way to improve contrast performance. If this can't be done with a single chip design, then it's about time to start experimenting with double stacked-DMD systems.

Perhaps they feel that the light loss from doing this is too big for it to sell? I think it would be nice to have the option. A DLP projector with 1000-1100 lumens max, but with fantastic on/off contrast and all the other inherent qualities that DLP can deliver, would be a really nice option for people with smaller screens (like myself).
